Highland Rest lies within Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge was the 500th National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) to be established in the United States. The refuge preserves a moist valley with unique wetlands and uplands at a relatively high elevation in the Allegheny Mountains. The property is 3800 above sea level (9.98 acres) and borders Dolly Sods Wilderness high on the mountain above (17,371 acres). Dolly Sods Wilderness contains bog and heath eco-types, more commonly typical to southern Canada. Elevations range from 2,500 to over 4,700 feet. If you sleep upstairs I would suggest take a thick blanket or a heater it was really cold upstairs despite bringing the temp up! The hot tub was amazing & clean.
