He immigrated to the United States as a teenager, settling in northern Alabama. Soon afterward he began studying at the newly founded Benedictine monastery of St. Bernard, where he took his vows in 1897. Br. Joseph was not allowed to be ordained as a priest, due to the rule of the period that stated any man with a distracting disability could not be ordained a priest. He ran the monastery’s power plant and was, even by a monk's standards, a withdrawn, quiet man. Shannon was very accommodating to make sure we had everything we needed prior to arrival. The cabin was immaculate, updated and clean. It was “just right” to feel at home, but without the stress. The location was perfect to make you feel secluded but close enough to amenities so you can make quick runs. The view of the lake is absolutely gorgeous. The description of the trail does not do it justice. The property has a trail leading to a cavern like area that is amazing! They have beautiful lights along the trail at night which makes it so majestic. The kids loved being out by the trail. Our stay at Smith Lake was wonderful! We brought two teenagers for Rock the South, and this location was perfect. It was a short drive, but just what we were looking for. The cabin itself was great! We loved the fabulous decks and the view of little cove and other surroundings were just so peaceful and relaxing. We were even able to take our little furbaby! Shannon was super, super helpful and even offered advice on where to eat and park when we headed to Rock the South. We also rented the boat every day and enjoyed the lake so much!
