« I booked a suite two months in advance. However, the suite I was assigned (923) faced an internal space with ventilation pipes running through it. There was no view and almost no light. I stayed there for a week with the curtains drawn. Even worse, a portable and noisy dehumidifier was running as soon as I entered. I was stuck with a damp smell for a week. There was no possibility of changing rooms because the hotel was declared full on the day of my arrival. I would like to say to those...

![The British Consulate at Takao is a building in the British style which was constructed in 1879, and is situated beside Shaochuantou Wharf, with a mountain behind and the sea in front. It is the oldest extant modern Western building in Taiwan, and was also the first consulate the British government built in Taiwan. This stand-alone red-brick building with wooden veranda was used as a venue for receiving diplomatic envoys and guests, as well as being the consul's residence. In 1900, it was reconstructed with an arched veranda. During the Japanese colonial period, it was converted into the Kaohsiung Marine Observatory. In the early period after the National Government took over Taiwan, it was converted again as a meteorological observatory. In 1977, Typhoon Thelma devastated the building. In 1985, a restoration project was initiated. In 1987, it was publicly proclaimed a historic site.
