Cette course a eu lieu le 22avril1889, lorsque près de 50000personnes se sont précipitées à la frontière pour revendiquer des terres dans une région autrefois connue sous le nom de terres non attribuées du territoire de l’Oklahoma. D’après plusieurs personnes, la course aux terres était une aventure chaotique: de nombreux pionniers pleins d’espoir y ont été écrasés, tandis que d’autres plus malhonnêtes, connus sous le nom de «Sooners», avaient déjà franchi illégalement la frontière bien à l’avance pour revendiquer les meilleures terres. Prenez le temps d’apprécier ces sculptures de bronze vives représentant 45colons en pleine course pour mettre la main sur des lopins de terre. Les œuvres, créées par l’artiste PaulMoore, comprennent des représentations de colons à cheval et d’autres dans des chariots. Bien que ces sculptures soient immobiles, Moore a réussi à capturer un véritable sens du mouvement, en représentant de nombreux chevaux en pleine course. En vous promenant dans le monument, essayez d’imaginer le désordre et le désarroi qui auraient régné ce jour-là, lorsque des foules immenses de personnes se sont toutes précipitées dans la région à la recherche des plus grandes parcelles. Le chaos est visible dans le monument, qui montre des chevaux en train de se cabrer et de tomber. Les monuments sont situés dans un parc au bord du canal. Pendant que vous y êtes, promenez-vous le long des rives du canal Bricktown, construit en1999 dans le cadre du programme de réhabilitation de la ville. Le monument du centenaire de la course aux terres est situé à l’extrémité sud du canal de Bricktown. Bien qu’il soit ouvert aux visiteurs à tout moment, prévoyez une visite en plein jour pour mieux inspecter les sculptures. L’entrée au parc est gratuite.
