HELENE Hurricane Helene did have an effect on the area. However, we are largely back to normal. Area roads and the roads to the cabin are repaired. Restaurants, attractions and other businesses have largely reopened and are operating like normal.
WHAT IS THE ROAD LIKE? IS 4-WHEEL DRIVE NECESSARY? 4-Wheel/All Wheel drive is not necessary. We visited the region for years in a Honda sedan without issue. Rear wheel drive vehicles with low ground clearance (like hatchbacks and several mini-vans), as well as light vehicles (small trucks), are not ideal and might take more experience to drive in steep sections. The way to the cabin is almost entirely on paved roads. The last 1-2 minutes is on a gravel road with one steep spot just before you turn onto our lane which is flat.
FALL FOLIAGE: Typically fall foliage begins October 1 and, barring an early frost, ends the first week of November. It usually peaks around the 20th through late October.
PHONE SERVICE: Verizon is the primary mobile carrier for the area. Other mobile users are encouraged to check their carrier's coverage in the region.
Prior to your stay, we require you to complete a pre-arrival form and sign & agree to our rental conditions.

Perfection
The pictures don’t do this place justice. Beautiful views from every room. You don’t even need to step outside to feel like you are. The house is well equipped, tastefully decorated, and is extremely spacious. This is our second time staying at a property owned by this owner and none disappoint. Is a must book kind of place. Will definitely come back.
Every Christmas I go away from the city. To get some peace and quiet. This was a great place to get that. I enjoy every single minute of it with the family.I recommended it to any one that want to be away from the noise and people. Love it. I would come back again.
My family stayed at Dougs Way for 4 nights over the Thanksgiving holiday. The house was absolutely perfect for our stay. It had everything we needed to cook, three different seating areas for dinners, and plenty of beds and bathrooms for the 12 of us. The house is beautiful with so many unique handcrafted touches and art on every wall. We loved sitting on the multiple porches for beautiful views, and having s’mores in the outdoor firepot. The location was great for us as Roan Mountain is our favorite hiking area! Lisa was also incredibly communicative and we are so thankful to have stayed this home!

Excellent!
Doug's Way is a wonderful choice if you wish to experience the wilderness with a very nice view. Specially, if you like to hike in the trails in Blue Ridge Pkwy, this will be a great location. We spent two nights and spent a lot of time sitting outside next to the fire pit, which was an amazing experience.
This house is very nice place, with all the modern furniture and nice floors. We loved the bath room in the master a lot. Kitchen was fully equipped with all what you need to prepare your meals. I would definitely say something about the owner. She is very nice and very descriptive and answer any question you have and very responsible too.
We had a wonderful time at this location and will definitely be returning again!

The perfect spot
Thank you, Lisa. This was the perfect spot for us to stay during the two weeks we were babysitting our 3-1/2-year-old. We will definitely try to stay here the next time we come back. I appreciate the care that went into the details of the space and all of the amenities. Clayton
Highly recommend this property. Incredible views, all the amenities, very clean, and plenty of space for a group of 7+.
Plans are to return in the summer months!

EXCELLENT STAY!
We booked this house first weekend of May 2019 for a large part of 18, all ages ranging from 3 year olds to 60 year olds. Based on the excellent photos provided by the owners, the house lived up to its expectations. The toughest part about the whole trip was getting to the house. There is a small section on the gravel road which is very hard to maneuver; we had a minivan, and two SUVs, all had a tough time to climb the section. Past this part, it was smooth sailing. Lisa gives very clear instructions on everything from how to get to the house and attractions in the area. Lisa was easy to contact after hours and was available through text during all times. Would definitely rent this cabin again for a wonderful experience.

This house was amazing!
The owners were great to deal with and gave us lots of information about the house. The house had more than enough room for 11 of us that ended up making our trip. The house was stocked with everything that we needed. Everything in the house was very well taken care of and clean. Next time we make a trip to the mountains, this house will be high on our list!!

AMAZING EXPERIENCE!!!
It was a great and wonderful experience for us. The house was beautiful both outside and inside, surrounded by amazing scenery and the location was easy to get to. The inside looked very nice, modern but cozy, spacious and full of amenities. Everything was neat and clean. Our group had 12 people and there was plenty of room for us to relax and spend quality time together. We were impressed with the level of details and thoughtfulness throughout the entire house. We found pretty much everything we needed to cook, entertain and relax. We wish our stay could be longer but nonetheless it was an amazing short vacation. Everyone in our group had a great time and very pleased with the house. Lisa was very helpful and thoughtful throughout the whole trip. She always replied to our questions and addressed our needs quickly. Dealing with her was a breeze. We will definitely want to come back again and also recommend this house to our families and friends.

More than we ever could have dreamed!!! Better than the pictures, the perfect getaway!
Though the pictures were terrific, believe me when I say that this far exceeds the photos. You could not ask for a more peaceful, private, stunning setting than this home. Every window, every angle is just another spectacular view, and there are multiple places to enjoy yourselves outside, all while in complete privacy.
While inside, we were blown away by all the extra touches - the structure of the home, from unique lighting to the way it was laid out just right to absorb the outdoors, to the cool bathrooms, and more. Then all the extra touches from Lisa, the WONDERFUL host - local pottery, PLENTY of towels, extra linens, blankets galore, and the kitchen was so stocked, you could host your family's holiday party there and need to bring nothing. I don't even like to cook on vacation, but I had no problem doing so there.
We went with a group of 13+ ladies for a women's retreat, and they all couldn't get over how perfect it all was. Some ladies enjoyed lounging downstairs catching up on their netflix, others outside, plus of course we explored locally. Lisa was SO accommodating! She answered all of my questions, gave additional suggestions for where to explore and where to eat and was always available whenever I had a question.
This is the 5th or 6th time I've stayed in the mountains in different areas, and this time has spoiled me for anywhere else. What I loved about this area was it is more rural than a typical mountain town getaway. A big part of the enjoyment was the journey and the feeling of being somewhere that was not so spoiled by man yet. Even if you are not into arts & crafts (me), you MUST at least go into a few of the local craftsman studios. We happened upon one while he was blowing glass, and he let us stay while explaining everything he was doing; it was absolutely amazing! Thank you Lisa for creating the perfect getaway!

Beautiful, comfortable home situated in a stunning location.
We are a family of 6 adults, one with special needs, so I have to look very closely at any place we stay to make sure everyone has adequate space. The two bedrooms up and two down worked out perfectly, although you may have to flip a coin for the to-die-for Master Suite! Large screen TV's in 3 rooms, in case someone is not on board with the favorite TV series. We all agreed on Fraiser! Nice selection overall.
The kitchen is well stocked and fun to use, and opens to all the social areas. Perfect.
Incredible vistas out each window, really breath-taking. Part of our week was nice enough to enjoy them on the lovely decks.
A very nice aside, is the artwork and pottery around the home, which might give you the bug to explore local galleries and lovely stores in the surrounding towns. Honestly I have found a new lovely addiction!
On your first approach to this little piece of heaven, you may worry, that if you find it, you may never make it out again. Well, once or twice up and down, and you will realize, it is not that challenging a task. We made many excursions, and explored the entire area, based on the exceptional detail that Lisa gave us.
As you are looking at the large number of offerings and trying to imagine what works for your particular party, I feel it is quite versatile in that regard. It is a beautiful home, and whether you want to stay put and write your memoirs, or explore western NC, you really can't go wrong with this rental.
Hope to return soon!
Thank you Lisa and Rick!

Hidden Gem!
Doug's Way is a fantastic choice for anyone wishing to escape into the wilderness without sacrificing all the comforts of home.
The house sits high enough up to give you amazing views yet it's only a short drive down into the town of Bakersville for supplies. We spent a lot of time sitting on the deck watching the family of deer that visited every morning and evening as well as the occasional cameo from the raccoon family. The back deck fire pit is great for gathering around and making smores while watching the firefly show.
This home is truly beautiful! We loved the hand crafted coffee cups and the simple elegance of the furniture as well as the very modern & well stocked kitchen. The floors are beautiful and the lighting complements all the details perfectly. The soaking tub is a fantastic way to end a day of mountain climbing before sinking into the wonderfully comfortable master bedroom bed - complete with it's own marvelous mountain view.
The owners are very happy to help you with any questions you have about the area and send a lot of information about the surrounding towns, complete with driving directions and recommendations.
Be sure to visit the quaint little town of Spruce Pines for great coffee and shopping and Little Switzerland is a great spot to stop for lunch.
We had a wonderful time staying at Doug's Way and will definitely be returning again soon!

A beautiful house with amazing views
Loved staying in this house! It is very private and quiet. Amazing views. The house is modern and very well maintained. The kitchen is fully stocked with appliances, dishes and other things that you might need (everything from the coffee grinder to ziploc bags and lighters :)) There is also an awesome family size grill and a fire pit. We loved every minute of our vacation. I will definitely recommend this house to my friends!
