Pensway has often been described by guests as the ideal hideaway as well as being a perfect cottage for a couple with a young family. Pensway is a very welcoming, quaint cottage, set in the heart of the small village of Burpham, a ‘hamlet’ at the entrance to an ancient Anglo Saxon ‘burgh’, hence the name. As a one-time wheelwright’s cottage Pensway is set in the heart of the village which is buried deep in the South Downs National Park and is surrounded by the Duke of Norfolk’s estate. Burpham is a cul de sac, accessed along a country lane by the river Arun, two miles from Arundel. Whilst Pensway dates from the eighteenth century, with typical exposed beams and some low doorways, it has been sympathetically architect-renovated to a high standard, with a modern bathroom but a traditional-style kitchen, an oak-framed conservatory dining room and a cosy sitting room with a wood burner. The compact and secluded garden, which has two relaxing and dining areas, a barbecue and lounge chairs, has views of the surrounding countryside. Guests will be aware during most of the day of the sound of pheasants and buzzards whilst at night only owls spoil the silence because there is no through traffic. Burpham is famed locally as a walker’s paradise and guests will see hikers and mountain bikers regularly pass their doorstep on the route to the South Downs Way, a couple of miles across the hillside. Although Arundel has an exceptionally large number of good quality restaurants and cafés, Pensway itself is only a two-minute walk to a good-quality gastro pub at Burpham. Centred around its celebrated castle, Arundel has many summertime events including a medieval pageant and guests can enjoy its Jailhouse jazz club, its clock golf course and its antiques and small specialist shops. Burpham is easily accessible to the high-energy of Brighton and at the same time to the Georgian cathedral city of Chichester, with its nationally-celebrated theatre, art gallery and nearby Fishbourne Roman Villa. Within a short distance are many sandy beaches such as Climping and the Witterings, whilst guests can take boats on the river at Arundel and Houghton, take sailing lessons in Chichester harbour or learn how to surf at the cool new surfers’ Beachcafé at Littlehampton. Local outdoor activities include horse riding in Arundel and golf at Littlehampton, whilst birdwatching at Arundel’s Wetlife Centre is complemented by a first-hand experience of birds of prey at West Sussex Falconry. Whilst being easily accessible to all the cultural and activity centres in the South of England, Pensway is nevertheless the perfect rural escape. Beach 7 miles. Pensway itself is compact (as you would expect from a 300-year-old cottage) but perfect for a family of four with everything we needed for a week's holiday. We very much enjoyed our stay and may well be back next year! We chose Pensway because of its proximity to Arundel and because of The George pub nearby. We know the area very well, so we're aware that there aren't any other 'facilities' in the village. The cottage does have one off road car parking space, a small car port, which would not be suitable for a larger car. The cottage had almost everything one might need, although I did notice there was no DVD player. Curiously, what I imagine is a small boxroom/third bedroom is locked and out of use for guests, likewise the cupboard under the stairs. The bathroom is very small but well-presented, but a second toilet would have been appreciated as there were four adults in our party. During our visit we experienced an exceptionally bad thunderstorm which resulted in a leak in the dining room and another on the landing, both of which required bowls to collect the water. The power tripped out but we located the fuse box and were able to reset it. Somewhere to hang wet coats would have been useful. The very best features of the cottage were the oak framed dining room with a dining table to linger over, which lead out into a lovely secluded and well-stocked cottage garden. The suntrap patio area was perfect for al fresco breakfasts and evening drinks, whilst another seating area nearby offered a more shady option. The oriental artefacts dotted around were very interesting and admired. Overall, we were very happy with our stay and would consider a return visit. ##### Anne This review comes from a trusted partner site and has not been verified. ### 8/10 Good #### Julia Feb 4, 2019 #### A lovely, small cottage in a quiet location. A lovely, small cottage in a quiet location. The garden was delightful - with the sound of owls close by at night. Apart from a very popular local pub there were no other amenities - although Arundel was only a few miles away. Once away from the quiet, very small village roads the A27 was very busy and difficult to get onto. For those who love peace and quiet this is a perfect cottage. ##### Julia This review comes from a trusted partner site and has not been verified. ### 10/10 Excellent #### Zoe Jan 9, 2019 #### Fabulous home in a wonderfully tranquil setting. Fabulous home in a wonderfully tranquil setting. So many lovely walks from the doorstop through the South Downs. The garden is as lovely as ever, although a little cool to enjoy this stay. The George is a great pub for drinks and dinner, and 2 minutes from the cottage. Maya, the local property manager, is very helpful. The perfect choice for a relaxing break. ##### Zoe This review comes from a trusted partner site and has not been verified. ### 8/10 Good #### Nicholas Oct 27, 2018 #### Pensway is in the beautiful village of Burpham which is surrounded by lovely countryside. Perfect cottage for short people. with 1.93 m you will bump your head multiple times. The bathroom is tiny as well. The shower is again not suitable for my length. Biggest disadvantage is the availability of only one toilet which is in the bathroom upstairs and put between the bath and washstand, restricting the space to move your arms. \[ and if you are to arrive late at night the presence of some toilet-paper would be handy. Luckily we brought some...........................\] Would I ever rent it again? Yes, primary for the location. ##### Chris ### 8/10 Good #### Bruce B.
