Many of the columns were salvaged from Roman structures throughout Iberia, while the arches were inspired by those in the Dome of the Rock. Fortunately for us, when Ferdinand III of Castile conquered the city in 1284 he kept the mosque largely intact, electing to build chapels inside the existing structure rather than tear it down and start anew.
