W. E. B. Du Bois inspired Holley to return to the South after he read Du Bois's writings on the plight of Albany's blacks in The Souls of Black Folk. Holley relocated to Albany to start a school. With the help of a $2,600 gift from the Hazard family, Holley organized a board of trustees and purchased 50 acres (200,000 m2) of land for the campus, all within a year. The aim of the institution at the time was to provide elementary education and teacher training for the local Black population. It was turned over to the state of Georgia in 1917 as Georgia Normal and Agricultural College, a two-year agricultural and teacher-training institution. The transition to four-year status heavily increased the school's enrollment. Which left my wife feeling on edge and not safe. We decided to go ahead and check out the inside of the house. To our surprise the inside of the house was pretty nice. However, the main entrance door only stays shut with the deadbolt locked and even then you can still see into the house. We were inside for about 10 minutes before we left to go pick up our marathon race packets. Upon returning we decided that we could not stay here and feel safe and relaxed. The location it self was making my wife’s anxiety go through the roof. We messaged the host that night and let him know we would not be staying there. We were not able to get a refund or credit. However, the host was great with communication and always responded in a timely manner. Pictures of the outside of the house really need to be included on the listing so you can what you are getting yourself into. If we had seen those pictures we would never have booked this house.
