Apartment in agadir center for families
Destroyed almost entirely by an earthquake in February 1960, Agadir was rebuilt according to a modern urbanization plan. You understand, do not go to Agadir to discover a traditional Moroccan city, but rather to enjoy the beach and excursions in the region, especially in the Souss Massa National Park.
History of the city
Probably founded by the Berbers, Agadir immediately attracts sailors along its coast. Bay sheltered from the winds, fertile ground and source of fresh water (the "founty"), Agadir has everything to please. In 1505, the Portuguese established a trading post and built a port.
In 1541, the Saadian Sultan Mohammed Cheick, interested in the strategic position of Agadir to control the "road of gold", seized the city. In the seventeenth century, Agadir is controlled by the Berbers. The port trade is growing strongly, the city is prospering
In 1760, the Alaouite sultan Sidi Mohammed ben Abdallah is jealous of this port that trades with Europe. It builds the port of Essaouira to a hundred kilometers to the north to divert the European trade. It's a blow for Agadir and the city is being depopulated little by little. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the population of Agadir is less than 1000 inhabitants.
The first half of the twentieth century sees the return of Agadir on the economic scene. Agriculture and fishing allow the city to develop a large port. Canneries are built and Agadir becomes the first sardine port in the world. This commercial activity has never stopped, Agadir remains today the first fishing port in the country.
Unfortunately, on February 29, 1960, at 23:47, the city is ravaged by a terrible earthquake that will kill 15,000 people. Almost all homes are destroyed in a few seconds. The whole country is very moved and the reconstruction of Agadir becomes a national challenge. Two years later, the city is reborn from its ashes ... respecting the antiseismic standards.
Today, Agadir is an important economic center, thanks to its port. 2nd tourist city of Morocco after Marrakech, the city is known for its beautiful seaside resort.
