### Beach lodge motel

"Nice vintage-style room. We rushed to arrive by 7pm, as the office closed at 7\. We arrived at 6:50 only to find the closed sign. Had to hit the emergency button. We prepaid for breakfast, but received no details from the young man that checked us in; however a beautiful and large breakfast was delivered to our room just before 8am. Had we been informed, we would have answered our door faster. The apartment was mostly clean, had adequate kitchen and included instant tea, coffee, and cocoa. A container of milk was provided at check in. Bed was comfortable; did find several long hairs on the sheets. Separate shower and toilet rooms were nice. Washroom vanity is very small. Hairdryer was great! Parking was right in front of our apartment. "

"Beautiful upgraded room with wrap around balcony. Staff was amazing, although they seemed to be short staffed much of the time. No fault of the staff, as they often seemed to be doing double or triple duty. But occasionally things were a bit slow. I would definitely stay here again. The location is fantastic and very walkable. "

![This piece of land on the Otago Peninsula was made into a reserve in the 1980's, to make sure it would always be protected for the Yellow Eyed Penguins. It is a self-funded conservation project that provides for the birds that make it their home - the nests are provided and their habitat is maintained and restored, there is a research program and a hospital for injured or sick birds. 

The tour takes you to the opposite coast where you can see the penguins come into shore and learn about their strange ways. We saw yellow eyed penguins, little blues and also fur seals. The yellow eyed penguins are endangered, because their juvenile survival rate is incredibly low, and they aren't prolific breeders.
