When the bell rings go out with a drink to watch the bridge opening and the yachts going out to sea and the fisherman returning with their catch in the evening. If there's a better spot in Whitby to watch the world go by I've yet to find it and I've been visiting for over 50 years! A light spacious flat with art work on the walls and a cosy dining/ living room. Sorry but not suitable for dogs, and as there are two flights of stairs into the flat unfortunately unsuitable for those with mobility problems. Young children will need supervision on the roof terrace. PLEASE NOTE AFTER TWO FIRES ON THE DECKING NO BBQ'S ARE PERMITTED ! It is in the heart of the town with a great roof terrace overlooking the town and estuary. Be aware there are 34 steps to the apartment (another 14 to the master bedroom) a bit onerous when unloading but worth it when you get there! However, parking is a nightmare!! It took 1 3/4 hours to find a space on arrival and we never did find a space in the ‘free’ road side parking. Hence we had to feed the meter every morning £9 a day! Felt a little uncomfortable in the small entrance alley,it seemed quite dirty.The stairs up to the apartment door were cracked and the light was on a sensor which didnt come on until i was on the second step. After unlocking the apartment door the stairs leading up were a disappointing first impression, they were covered with a plastic protector which was dirty and torn.Once in the apartment it was comfy and well equipped if a little tired in places. Carpet needed a clean and some painting was needed. Beds were clean with nice linen. Roof terrace was impressive view wise.There was an upturned table and a storage box with no front on which was littered with a broken chair and various broken and mouldy bits of fishing equipment which spoiled the area. I didnt use the kitchen but it seemed really well equipped. There was a mix up with my booking,the property was double booked. John's apartment Swingbridge Lookout is an absolute must for a stay in the beautiful Whitby! Superb location enabling you to explore what Whitby has to offer and a chance to be immersed in this wonderful character of this bustling seaside town. The apartment itself is fantastic, super spacious, full of character, homely and very well equipped for those that enjoy the self catering style of break. I thoroughly enjoyed the various artwork and quirky Dracula ornaments positioned around the place! The roof terrace is most definitely the jewel in the crown for this place! Easily accessible from the living room area and a wonderful place to enjoy a morning cuppa or evening glass of wine watching the comings and goings over the Swingbridge and beyond. You really do get a 'bird's eye view' from here and can even see the steam trains pulling in and out of the station. I'd also like to point out how comfortable the beds are here and that is normally a problem for me in most places that we stay in. There was nothing nicer that waking up and popping your head through one of the skylight windows to see what the weather was doing or to see the lovely St Mary's Church up at the Abbey headland. A great location to explore the beauty of Whitby. Everything very comfortable although front door & steps very pigeonified!!! But generally a great location, loved the views from the upstairs bedroom !!!!! ##### Nicola H. Amazing roof top terrace with brilliant views. We had lovely weather and spent quite a few hours soaking up the sunshine and enjoying the views. Thank you to John for this little gem.
