Hotel is very nice. It is family run. Loved the view overlooking the river. Really calm and tranquil. Very nice hosts.
The main issue with this was with Expedia booking. They failed to tell us that this hotel does not accept credit cards— they only accept cash. We found out when we were already in Portugal.
Hosts were apologetic and told us that Expedia has been told multiple times about the payment in cash only.
Despite my e-mails to Expedia team, I never received any response. Very disappointed with Expedia.
The property is all about the views, which are amazing. The infinity pool is gorgeous. We were told we had a room with a view. We actually had a room with no windows, only a side door that opened onto a patio which had gorgeous views, but not the room itself. Breakfast in the morning was excellent served on the patio. The room had spotty wifi. Better wifi was available in the public living room. The property is far from almost everything. To get to it are a lot of narrow, winding roads. The little town of Masao Frio had very few restaurant choices. The next closest town is 20 minutes on scary roads for driving at night. The staff were less than helpful and not all of them friendly. We were told we did not need a dinner reservation at their recommended place if we got to town before 7:30. At 7:15 the restaurant said their next available table was after 9 PM. We were told at check-in that we had to prepay with cash, no credit cards accepted. Lucky we just about had enough cash; we were not told in advance.
Such a relaxing, elegant respite from an enchanting day in the Douro Valley...of course. With an salt water infinity pool and picnic breakfast delivered to the room, and a million dollar (Euro?) view of the Douro River, surrounded by vinyards; and friendly, responsive staff...it doesn't get better than this.
It was very picturesque, views were incredible and the staff are very friendly. Our room was on the second floor which had a shared balcony with 2 other rooms so not much privacy and you could hear everyone’s conversations. Also be aware when choosing this hotel that they don’t accept credit cards, only cash. We did not get that notification and were not prepared to have that much cash at check in. (The manager was quite rude about it but another staff member helped us find a solution.)
The property is located in a prime location within the Douro valley and the view from our room was world class. It is a beautiful hotel and setting. Our only negative was the word at check in that they did not accept credit cards..... The local ATM only dispensed up to E200 every 24 hours..... Not acceptable in this day and age,
Amazing in every way! Best view! Best helpful staff. We didn’t bring cash- forgot they don’t take cards Titianna was so helpful and patient. Best staff at any hotel I’ve been in- anywhere. PayPal did the trick. The breakfast was the best ever! View of the Douro from our table! Room was cozy. Great dining recommendation. We felt so taken care of there. It was by far, the best place we have stayed in Portugal! The home is beautiful as is everything. We didn’t want to leave.
Absolutely stunning guesthouse in the Douro valley with well appointed rooms. Peaceful and pastoral with a more than accommodating and pleasant staff. The view of the Douro valley from our terrace was breathtaking. We stayed 4 nights, but were sad to leave.
We have an amazing experience staying in Casa de Canilhas. The owner is very accommodating. I highly recommend this place. Have a stunning view of the Douro Valley River.
Our host was wonderful. A breakfast basket was delivered to our room daily - filled to the brim with our custom meal. Fresh squeezed Orange juice, fresh orange slices, eggs, coffee, etc. brilliant.
The view was magical - the Douro vineyards and river unfolded before us.
We loved our room, can’t wait to return.
We absolutely loved Casa de Canilhas. I cant imagine a better place to stay in Douro. The breakfast was fantastic, made to order with many options. The view is unbeatable and the rooms are perfect. We felt like we were visiting family in Portugal.
This is a very clean small hotel. The staff is very friendly and attentive. Breakfast is very good, generous. We were able to eat outside and enjoyed the beautiful views. The hotel is located near Misao Frio. There's not a lot of tourism in this area which we appreciated. It made for a very quiet stay. The roads and alleys nearby offer opportunities to walk/excercise while enjoying the scenic views. A local grocery (20 minute walk) offers all you may need. The local restaurants and cafes (also walking distance ) are excellent.
Traveling there: We travelled by train and arranged for a taxi to bring us to/from the hotel (10 Euros per trip). It may be advantageous to have your own car if you want to travel around and visit wineries.
Quirky but great. Amazing base for exploring the local area. The views are outstanding as well. This hotel is on my list of best hotels to stay in Europe!
Absolutely LOVED this place! The room was clean and comfortable, the breakfast was great and the view from our patio balcony was out of this world. I wish we had left an extra day for hanging out by the pool or just sitting on the balcony, absorbing the fresh air and spectacular scenery with glass of wine in hand(which we did for both evenings we were there). It's one of those special places that you don't want to leave.
Best ever view of the Douro valley. Accommodations were superb. Only two problems. No fridge in the room and they do not accept credit cards. Would have purchased a case of wine but only accepted cash. Otherwise a great place to stay.
The location is amazing with spectacular views down the river. So peaceful and quiet. The room was very clean and the attention to detail was great. Breakfast was served in the room and was a real treat. Service was friendly. A couple of minor things that it is worth knowing about if you visit. Hotels.com still say they take credit cards but they do not. Parking is off street. It's safe and plenty of it but it is not on site and a short walk up a hill. Don't let it put you off - great place to stay!

Great room and fantastic breakfast. The grounds are beautiful. The only downside was the fact that it is a “family house” (their term) and it didn’t feel like guests were very welcomed. The very nice sitting room with a fireplace is roped off and you must ask to go in. We went out to sit on the balcony and were yelled at by a woman saying “This is my area!”. I think the owners need to decide if they want a private house or a hotel…

The Described area was properly isolated with tapes and these restrictions only apply in this period of PANDEMIA,
This separation only exists because the owners reside in the same space and need to protect themselves. We apologize if we made you feel any embarrassment, it is not our intention at all. We also miss our pleasant interactions in our social room with our guests.
We are hopeful that everything will return to normal one day!
Beautiful accommodations. Stunning view. Breakfast could be available earlier. Would love to have met the owners for a more personal feel. Staff was courteous.

Thanks!
My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights upon arrival in Portugal. This hotel is incredible. It is perched on the top of vineyards which dot the hills coming up from the Duero river. The the views are unbelievable. We cannot imagine a better way is better way to spend our 1st 2 days in Portugal.
The hotel is situated in a spectacular spot with breathtaking views of the Douro Valley. Internally the property is quirky and has it’s own style with the family’s footprint evident throughout. It’s definitely worth a stay, with the added benefit of friendly staff. Two points to note, the hotel only accepts cash, nearest ATM about 20 minutes drive, and there isn’t, a Restaurent attached, although you can order from a limited room service menu until about about 7.30 p.m. But worth the effort to visit.
We had a very spacious room on the main floor overlooking the Douro River. The view from our room and terrace was breathtaking. Breakfast was excellent and parking on the street above the Casa very safe and easy. It is a 15 minute walk to Mesão Frio where there were a few decent restaurants. We stayed for 2 nights and hook the train from Rede to Pinhão where they have boat tours and the Symington Estates winery. The place itself feels like a small castle. Staff made a fire for us, put on background music. All round great experience.
