It is around 2 hours (or more) drive from washington DC. This is a picture of the "Dream Lake", a spring of water which has a mirror-like appearance. Stalactites are reflected in the water making them appear to be stalagmites. This gives an illusion that the lake is deeper. The lake is connected to a spring that continues deeper into the caverns. All in all, it was my first time exploring caverns. It was a fun filled day, learning the stories of the cavern. Tips: 1) It is very crowded on weekends and holidays. If you want to enjoy peaceful, slow paced, less crowded tour of the caverns, go on weekdays. 2) If you visit the caverns, look for these things- Saracen's tent - scarves and shawls of translucent calcite, falling in graceful folds, fringed with a thousand patterns, and so thin that a candle light can reveal the structure within! The fried eggs formation - yes, it looks like fried eggs ;) The Great Stalacpipe Organ - An actual organ which plays music- sounds of Stalactites! Since it is in the lower level of a home, you do have the noise of people above you but it was very quiet at night and in the early morning.It snowed while we were visiting and the host was so kind he cleared our walkway too.
