Admire the excellent acoustics in the Planetarium of Music, while you gaze up at the stars through the metal blue dome.

The Tonhalle Duesseldorf is a magnificent concert hall with an awe-inspiring auditorium. The main hall is decorated with light brown wooden balconies and galleries, with a spectacular blue-colored dome overhead. Attend a musical performance and enjoy the sweet sounds under the shiny, arched roof.

Capture photos of the structure’s exterior, noting the light green dome and redbrick façade of this round building. It was initially constructed as a planetarium, before being converted into a concert hall in the 1970s. Although the complex keeps up the city’s rich orchestral traditions, it also has jazz, soul and other genres.

The complex puts on more than 350 concerts per year, many of which include the Duesseldorf Symphonic Orchestra and its 130 musicians. Enjoy the remarkable acoustics in this large, round building. Look up at the stars above Duesseldorf through the metal blue filter of the dome. The main hall has a capacity for 1,854 guests and the music chamber has 300 seats.

Attend a talk with the conductor in the rotunda before some performances. Enjoy Sunday brunch at the café, which hosts a buffet. Guided tours of the planetarium of music are offered late in the afternoon. See art exhibits and get a look behind the scenes.

Note that the hall was designed and built in 1926 as a planetarium by architect Wilhelm Kreis, who also worked on war projects in Dresden and Berlin and later became a supporter of the Nazis.

The box office opens 1 hour before its respective concert. Visit the concert hall to ask about ticket availability Monday through Friday from morning until evening and Saturday until afternoon. Pay a fee for a guided tour of the structure.

Find the Tonhalle Duesseldorf just north of the historic center of the city. It is beside the Oberkasseler Bridge on the Rhine River. Take the bus or subway to the Tonhalle/Ehrenhof station, which is immediately in front of the concert hall. Visit nearby attractions, including the Hofgarten, the Kinderspielplatz and the Kunst Academy Gallery. Check the website for schedules of upcoming concerts and information on parking options.
