It is a historic city associated with the foundation of the nation and Portuguese identity, with more than a thousand years since its formation, when it was referred to as Vimaranes. The city is known as “The Cradle of the Portuguese Nation” because here took place in 1128 the main political and military events that would lead to independence and the birth of a new nation. The historic centre is recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO

Vieira do Minho

Amarante probably had its origin in the primitive peoples who inhabited the Aboboreira mountain range (inhabited since the Stone Age), although the exact name of its founders is unknown. However, it only began to gain importance and visibility after the arrival of São Gonçalo (1187-1259), born in Tagilde, Guimarães, who settled here after pilgrimage through Rome and Jerusalem. To this saint is attributed the construction of the old bridge over the River Tâmega.
