Well worth a stopover if in the area
Although off the normal tourist routes, those who enjoy staying in Parador castles and other historical Paradores will want to add the Parador de Alcaniz and the town of Alcaniz, itself, to their itinerary if at all possible. Situated in an early thirteenth-century fortress castle built by warrior-monks of the Order of Calatrava, the hotel is perched on a promontory overlooking the surrounding countryside and the historic town of Alcaniz first established during the period of Islamic rule. As usual, the conversion of the castle into a modern Parador has been tastefully done while respecting the peculiarities of the original buildings. This is most evident in the manner in which its large restaurant, bar and breakfast room have been situated at separate locations within the hotel, each offering their own, distinct historical ambience (the restaurant and bar are easy to find but entry to the breakfast room requires one to exit the hotel proper and walk up a flight of stone stairs). My wife, daughter and I found our rooms to be comfortable and dinner and breakfast well-worth taking in the hotel, rather than searching for a restaurant in town. It is worth noting that the Parador attracts outside visitors to the castle keep, chapel, cloister, tower, and sepulchre, most of whom opt to take scheduled tours during the day. Fortunately, we found the groups quiet and unobtrusive and that the hotel offered ample parking place for its guests.

We loved the castle. The tour guide, Fernando, was interesting and very well informed- we peppered him with questions about Spanish history. Spectacular building and views, lovely dining room.

Fantastic hotel and the town of Alcaniz is also very historic and interesting. Both have a lot to offer and if you are staying just one night, arrive as early as you can in order to see everything, but also to fully enjoy the hotel itself. Dinner and breakfast both very good.

Staying in a small town instead of a major city was a nice change. The castle grounds are beautiful but simple.The tour of the historic tower was very interesting. The guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. We also liked walking around the town. We drove from Valencia then onto Madrid. We really enjoyed viewing the Spanish countryside and the roads in Spain are outstanding.

Those foolish enough to drive aimlessly up the freeway from Madrid to Barcelona will never experience the amazing quality of a truely unique place. Great stay in an historic building
Spain has a large number of very interesting cities, towns and villages. Alcaniz is not one of them. However, the Parador at Alcaniz commands an impressive view of the surrounding countryside. In addition, the whole structure of the hotel is impressive, being housed in a historic building. We found the staff very helpful. We did not dine in the restaurant as we were on a long trip and we did not want to dine late. However, the hotel has an excellent bar service which serves food throughout the afternoon and evening. We certainly recommend this hotel as the place to stay in Alcaniz.

We stayed at this hotel for one night and had a great experience! It was amazing sleeping in a medieval castle with all modern amenities. The staff was very friendly. The room and the beds were very comfortable and clean. We had dinner at their restaurant and it was also very good.

We stayed one night on a tour of the region. Service was good and the food was amongst the best we have had in a parador. The town is relatively uninteresting - the highlight is the parador/castle itself.

A First Class Parador
This Parador is located in a castle-like fortress on a rise in the middle of town. It is a story-book setting and the accommodations are excellent. Sensibly priced and agreeable and helpful staff.

Nicely modernized space, lovely outdoor patio with breeze, hotel is high on hill with easy 10 min (vigorous) walk to old downtown. Yet another beautiful church in town square with several cafe/restaurants nearby. People very friendly & helpful even though we don't speak much Spanish/Catalan.

A great castle visit
Parador de Alcaniz is an impressive and comfortable parador in a quiet village in Aragon. We used it as a stop over on the way from Madrid to the Costa Brava. The grounds are very well manicured (sitting in the courtyard and having a glass of wine is a must-do treat) and the hotel offers a storybook experience whilst being comfortable and accommodating. I recommend it for a night or two.

Very good hotel to be expected of a 'Parador', probably better than most three stars. Good restaurant within the hotel and breakfast was good although extra 16 euros per person on top of hotel price. If you are an experienced gym user you will be disappointed with the gym hidden away in a little room, perhaps a token gesture to improve star rating. Local town not very touristy but if you are driving to Alcanzi using the CV10 the surrounding area is very scenic.

Well worth a visit.
Fabulous old building; hotel itself and the staff were very helpful and friendly. The restaurant served really excellent local food albeit slightly overpriced. However, the decent bottle of wine we had was good value so dont let that put you off. The hotel sits at the highest point in the town, and although the town itself wasn't too inspiring by the standards of some other Spanish towns, the parador made a perfect place to stop after a day of touring the surrounding countryside.
