Narrow alleys, cobbled walkways, stairs up and down, leading in all directions. Chefchaouen's powder blue buildings mirror the cloudless Moroccan sky - but religious rather than stylistic reasons are behind the design choice. Jewish teachings suggest that by dyeing thread with tekhelel (an ancient natural dye) and weaving it into prayer shawls, people would be reminded of God's power. The tradition lives on in the regularly repainted blue buildings. The walls are adorned with carpets, purses, blankets, paintings and much more. It's earned a reputation for being one of the prettiest towns in the country and you would really miss out on something special if Chefcahouen is not on your Morocco itinerary.
