Comfortable, well-managed hotel, perfect location
Never having been to Stockholm, we chose the Rival based mainly on an old NY Times Travel section recommendation. We were not disappointed. The public areas are beautiful, the "superior" room large for a European hotel and quite comfortable. The bathroom was small but well-organized, and the shower was topnotch - roomy with a cascade shower head. Although there is a bar and nightclub on the first floor, we heard no noise in our third floor room. The hotel faces a lovely square, so even in front rooms, there is no traffic noise, an important consideration in a town with cobblestone streets. There are restaurants and cafes nearby neighborhood, so you don't have to have the expensive hotel breakfast buffet if you only want a coffee and croissant. The hotel is one block from the Mariatorget T-bana station and a ten-minute walk across a bridge to Old Town. If we have one complaint, it is the same complaint we have about almost all Northern Europe hotels: the bedding consists of a bottom sheet and a down comforter enclosed in another sheet. We had to remove the sheet and sleep under it to avoid sweating through the night. Hoteliers, please put a blanket in the room! The Rival was developed by Benny Anderssen of ABBA, so you'd better not be repelled by ABBA kitsch in your room.
