Not planning a trip out to Cumberland? How about a day trip to Jekyll and St Simon Islands to the north? Or Amelia Island/Fernandina Beach, Jacksonville, or St. Augustine to the south? Don’t forget about the Okefenokee Swamp just an hour to our west. And if you have a loved one stationed at Kings Bay, then this is the place to stay while visiting. This cozy cottage is tucked away off the street down a picket fence lined driveway. You’ll be encouraged to sit awhile on the front porch with seating for two to relax and enjoy a morning coffee. The dining area has seating for five with a cute corner breakfast nook and chairs. The table can be expanded with a leaf tucked away inside. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you’ll need to cook great meals at home. There is a Keurig coffee maker with a variety of coffee pods, creamer, and sugar provided. The living room has a spacious sofa and loveseat, a Roku TV, and an electric fireplace to help you relax after a day exploring the area. The master bedroom has a comfortable king sized bed, a cozy reading chair, a Roku TV, and it’s own en-suite master bathroom with double vanity and walk-in shower. The second bedroom has full sized bunk beds and it’s own adjoining bathroom with tub shower combo. There is a CordaRoy brand bean bag in the corner of the second bedroom that can be used for extra seating in the living room but also unzips and contains a 60”x60” floor mattress suitable for a child up to about age 8 to sleep on. There is a third half bathroom and a small laundry closet with washer and dryer on either side of the small hallway. On the backside of the house off the kitchen is the screened porch with an outside dining table, a pair of rocking chairs, a pair of arm chairs, and string lights along the ceiling that are on a timer, all to help you enjoy our south Georgia climate to its fullest. A pair of adult cruiser bikes are there for you to use on your exploration of downtown St. Mary’s. ———————————Jacksonville International Airport is 31 miles (approximately 30-35 away minutes). Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base is 7 miles away (10-15 minutes). Perfect if visiting a loved one stationed there. Two public boat ramps downtown just blocks away from the cottage. James Oglethorpe first built on Cumberland Island in 1736, building a hunting lodge that he named Dungeness. Oglethorpe named the place after Dungeness, in England. The next Dungeness was the legacy of Revolutionary War hero Nathanael Greene, who had acquired 11,000 acres of island land in exchange for a bad debt. His widow built a four-story tabby mansion in 1803, over a Timucuan shell mound. During the War of 1812 the island was occupied by the British, who used the house as a headquarters. In 1818 Henry “Light-Horse Harry” Lee, a dashing cavalry commander during the Revolutionary War and father of Robert E. Lee, stayed at the house until his death on March 25, 1818, cared for by Greene's daughter Louisa, and was laid to rest in nearby cemetery with full military honors provided by an American fleet stationed at St. Marys, Georgia. The house was abandoned during the U.S. Civil War and burned in 1866. In the 1880s the property was purchased by Thomas M. Carnegie, brother of Andrew Carnegie, who began to build a new mansion on the site. The 59-room Queen Anne style mansion and grounds were completed after Carnegie's death in 1886. His wife Lucy continued to live at Dungeness and built other estates for her children, including Greyfield for Margaret Carnegie, Plum Orchard for George Lauder Carnegie, and Stafford Plantation. By this time, the Carnegies owned 90% of the island. The Carnegies moved out of Dungeness in 1925. In 1959 the Dungeness mansion was destroyed by fire, alleged to be arson. The ruins are today preserved by the National Park Service as part of Cumberland Island National Seashore. The host provided area information ahead of time. Everything we might need was thoughtfully provided...even a drawer of "in case you forgot something" items. We saw "wildlife" in the yard: cardinals, woodpeckers and blue jays. The cottage is in a quiet neighbohood but close to the shops and restaurants along the waterfront. We had family over for games and cooked with ease. All kitchen stuff was fully stocked. It’s the ideal location a couple blocks off the main street, so it’s close to everything but nice and quiet. The cottage is roomy and immaculately clean. It’s well stocked with paper goods, kitchen utensils and appliances, and linens. And the host is friendly and responsive; we had great communication before, during and after our stay. We rent properties several times a year on VRBO and, I have to say, this property was one of our favorites so far! The house was immaculate. I cooked several times and the kitchen was large and well stocked with cookware. The back porch was even nicer than it appears in the photos! It was a short walk to the ferry and the road we walked along to get there had virtually no traffic. It was quiet at night, which is always appreciated. It's the details that make this cottage special. From the fully stocked coffee bar to the cute beach bikes, Eileen really thought of everything. There was even bug spray on the back porch. It was also very clean and comfortable. We enjoyed exploring St. Mary's by bike, taking the ferry to Cumberland Island, and hitting Fernandina Beach. It was a low key, quiet, peaceful week. Norris Cottage was absolutely perfect for our brother-sister getaway! The cottage was very clean, quiet and exceptionally comfortable. Each bedroom has its own full bathroom, which gave us our own private bedroom/bathroom space. Our favorite part of the cottage was the spacious screened in porch. We spent a lazy late Sunday afternoon chatting and putting together a puzzle after a morning trip to Amelia Island. It is an easy walk to restaurants, live music, waterfront park and the Cumberland Island Ferry. We had a wonderful time. ##### Erika R. The house was so cute, clean and comfortable. All the little touches in the house made us feel so welcomed and pampered. Enjoyed our day at Cumberland Island. Eileen was an excellent host and was very responsive. We all enjoyed our coffee sitting in the screened in porch. The squirrels and little lizards in the yard put on a show fir us!
