Layover in St.Maarten made uncomfortable
I've decided to stop in St.Maarten for a day on my way home after the holidays. This was a spontaneous solution, so there has been no time for research, and not too many options left.
Looking at the map, the hotel seemed quite close to the beach
Arrival was in the evening, so I just needed to go to bed.
Taxi from the airport was 15 min drive and cost something like $12. Check-in quick and easy, but then there was a so-called on property shuttle. It took about 5 min of waiting time, and under 30 seconds of the actual drive (20 metres of upward sloping road). The driver has left me at some rear entrance by a construction and showed me at an open back door saying that I should simply go through there and up one flight of stairs. This was funny, because if you travel light like me then you don't need the shuttle at all, but if you have lots of luggage then going up the stairs with all of it is not at all that convenient.
The room was clean and rather comfortable, with a small kitchen etc. Bedding and towels (there have been plenty of those) are acceptable.
So straight I went to the bed. Issue is that when I woke up at 4am and wanted a glass of water, there was none available. Not in the room, not in the whole resort. Reception apparently didn't have any either (as if nobody drinks water in the whole resort). I mean this shows you the hospitality culture.
Nearby 24hr drive-thru was also closed :-) , but 20 mins of walking and a bottle of water was in my hand. Happy end )))
