The room is fairly basic for the price. The breakfast is VERY overpriced, but there are not many other options in the surrounding area. I booked a king bed, but was given a room with two singles. The staff switched me to a much smaller room with a double bed when I brought this to their attention. We stayed ther after a former visit of 1 week in last year. Staff was frienly, speaking English. The general shape of Hotel is about as best time is passed now. This time in November the indoor pool was - in despite to booking - not accessable ("closed in winter"). Some items like safebox, TV had to be claimed for repair and even climatisation/heater did never really work. Also in the evening, bar and cafe are closed too early - several people would have liked getting together there but must order before 22:30\. Breakfast was suggested to be included in booking price, but on site it was not. The advantage of the hotel is the nice neigbourhood to the botanical garden and it is very quiet and well established in this quarter. Thus in the evening there are no activities available nearby and the distance to the city center is relatively far. The internet was working fairly. The hotel was very clean, the staff extremely professional and everyone spoke at least a little bit of english, and the hotel is walking distance from the beautiful Shanghai Botanical Gardens (only 20RMB, or about $3.50 entrance fee). The room was cleaned well every day and we had a lovely view of the hotel's pond and black swans. I have been to the tourist areas of Shanghai several times, so for me, it was not neccessary to be in the heart of the tourist district. What is remarkable about Skylight Gardents is its immediate proximity to the Shanghai Botanical Gardens. As a hotel guest, you have free admission, and a private gate that enters into an expansive oasis. If you are in trepidation of air pollution and the hustle and bustle of Shanghai, I would recommend this hotel. The downside is that it is not close to major attractions.
