When faced with 'issues', I rate the hotel staff by how much they work with me to resolve the problem. Travelers without Chinese skills, or traveling with someone who has them, are likely to find some difficulty. Usually there are at least 1 staff with adequate English skills. First, you do NOT stay in the building where you check in. The 'annex' is up the stairs and across the street (no problem). Second, when I asked, the reception staff told me the main building is a 5 star while the annex is a four star. For certain, the annex is not 4 star. This trip I stayed at 10 different hotels, on the mainland, Hong Kong and in Taiwan. Most concierges have relationships with local travel guides - this one did not. Most business centers do NOT have a computer with an English keyboard - this one did not. Also, while half of the hotels were happy to mail a postcard (5-15 RMB) this one could not and, unless you are acquainted with China Post, good luck. At the annex front desk the staff spoke almost less English than I speak Chinese! Ordering, and confirming, laundry service, upon which I relied on my extended trip, was an ordeal. Russians! Sanya is geared towards Russian tourist with even some of the storefronts having signs in Russian. Fortunately, the Russian speaking store clerks spoke more English than the Chinese.
