Beautiful property with wildlife, animals, and ruins to see as you walk around. The food was more american than mexican but still very delicious. The room was lovely and clean. The staff were generous and helpful. It is close to many attractions and you can book tours and adventures through the hotel. Highly recommend for a relaxing and adventure filled vacation!

The food was very bad! Only being able to book dinners the day of and not being able to get in if you didn’t go to the desk first thing in the morning. Coffee bar was additional money. Advertised with many amenities yet half the pools and restaurants were only availible for RCI members. Staff was wonderful the resort was bad. I would never recommend!

Great property! The rooms are a bit noisy as you can hear people in the hallways or adjacent rooms. But the resort is has a lot to offer and the experience was good.

We didn’t receive any vip benefits. I travel the world and this was the first time the perks weren’t honored, despite the fact the hotel occupancy was low. We walked to our room at the other end of the property only to find out it was already occupied by someone else. The luggage clerk told us he wasn’t able to solve the problem via the walk-in talkie and we had to walk back for good 10 minutes in the heat to get to the lobby where we waited good 20 minutes to get keys to another room. The guy who was the receptionist at our building g was disrespectful and rude. The first night there was a wild party in the room adjacent to ours and i called the front desk to take care of it , since it was midnight, to no avail. At 12:30 am i went there myself and asked them to calm down. I have been coming to that hotel since the kids were small. We always liked it because of th proximity to Xcaret. But this was definitely our last time. I don’t feel like bent bothered about time share everywhere i move. Done.

My husband and I had an amazing time at this resort. The property is beautiful, we loved being surrounded by the jungle and seeing animals every day. We also loved the adults-only saltwater pool that feeds from the ocean where you are surrounded by fish! We thought the food and buffet quality was excellent. We definitely plan to return in the future with kids one day! Highly recommend this resort, great for a couples getaway like we did or also great for families with kids.

Property could used some renovations. Majority of the pools are missing tiles. Elevators can be dirty at times. Hotel rooms do not carry wash cloths.

Food was not good. Hard time to make a food reservation. Short staffed. They only had one bottle of the same tequila at the bar once it was finished they tried giving you cheap tequila. I would not stay there again.

Expedia SCAM and complete rip off. We paid hundreds over after taxes and fees to stay at this property for ONE night and others paid 2/3rds less per night, some people paid less than that! We felt so ripped off. We received no VIP treatment, and the food was like Dennys and the Hotel like Holiday Inn. We thought we were going to get a high-end resort experience but instead we got ripped off. We wanted to stay one night to see if we should bring our kids back but it is not worth it. We were so excited to see this destination but thoroughly got ripped off - if you want to save money go online via Mexico google and you will save a ton of money. I would post the prices we paid, but Expedia will not allow it.

We stay at this property twice a year. Excellent, well-maintained property providing exceptional value. The small beach cove provides calm water year-round. The pools are about 4 feet deep and so they heat up nicely on sunny days. Food is wonderful with many choices including 3 buffet restaurants and 5 private dining restaurants. The Expedia building is centrally located near the quiet pool. I ask and within a few minutes someone is there to help.

The resort is beautiful , good food variety. They need better night shows. There were a couple of incidents with the staff, since we are not members of the resort they did not try to help.

It is not a rue all inclusive. Limited drinks in the room, no room service unless you want to pay for it, if you want anything other then house wine you have to pay for it.

Loved snorkeling in the adult only saltwater pool. Loved morning omelettes at the beach buffet. Loved the monkeys, coatis, and iguanas! We thought the buffet food was similar to every other resort we’ve been to; we didn’t go hungry. We never had a problem with hot water like other people, and we were always able to find a seat at any pool or the beach. We stayed in the cheapest deluxe room and did not feel like we were missing out on anything spectacular. As animal lovers, we felt a little bad for the deer and macaws. We hope they are living good lives? I gave a 4 for cleanliness because our room was not thoroughly cleaned when we arrived (there was literally coffee cups with coffee still in them, fingerprints on every flat surface, etc.). They cleaned it very well after we called attention to it. Overall, I LOVE Mexico and would certainly stay there again.

The hotel is beautiful, but we will never comeback to this hotel I went with my family to celebrate my son's birthday, I let the people in reception know but no one had any special details for the occasion, and the quality of the food was terrible, cheap, drinks make with the cheaper alcohol, we never get success to go to any restaurant because everything was book, the only place we aet was the buffet, the staff was friendly and the hotel beautiful but the quality is terrible.

I have mixed feelings. I purposely waited a few days before leaving this review. The place is beautiful, full of wildlife, I saw deers a mere 5 feet in front of me. Iguanas and other small animals. The beach was enchanting, complete with ruins of what was once a Maya village. Nice sandy cove. The staff for the most part was friendly. The bad, well we start off on a bad note, terrible 1st impression. We are tired from the voyage, it is hot, we check in, waited for about 15-20 minutes til check-in. Our luggage was to be taken to our rooms, we waited in wet sweaty clothes for an hour waiting for our luggage, I would have been better if I would have wheeled it to my room, we are unable to shower as we have no clothes to wear. I had to leave my autistic child in the room alone to venture to the front of the hotel to find out what's going on. I was not advised of the wi-fi code upon checking in prompting another visit to the front lobby. There is no elevator in the room buildings. I reserved two rooms. My wife and daughter's room was in a separate although nearby building. You have to haul your luggage up and down the stairs. I start warming up to the place and then me and my son get food poisoning. We suspect that we ate some bad meat at the Taco restaurant in the 2nd floor, it had a weird odor and taste. The buffet food was ok. I cannot recommend this resort. It was heartbreaking to hear my autistic child crying for help as he was puking bad food.

My first resort stay ever. I loved the resort. It's a very big property, with a lots of gorgeous jungle filled with deers, iguanas, coatis, etc. Several swimming pools, including one for adults only and a natural pool with beautiful fish to see. The food was generally good and diversified. I think the food at the buffet was better than the specialty restaurants. Tried 2 of these and I was not impressed. Super friendly staff. However two bad comments: 1. the bedrooms do get humid quickly, there's no air vent in the bathroom. 2. Also, it may sound weird to some, but I don't like the use of animals as distractions, like the parrots. The pens for the flamingos and for the deers are really small.

The property itself is beautiful and well maintained. Having to get up early before 7 am to stand in an hour long line each day to make a dinner reservation is not ideal on vacation. There has got to be a better way to do this. It’s 2024. My teens did not have pants for dinner so we could not go to the nicer dinner options. However, they weren’t allowed in the saltwater pool near the ocean even when I offered to sign a waiver for them because “they are children and it’s not safe.” However at dinner they are considered “gentleman” and are supposed to abide by the dress code although “children” are exempt. Which are they? I paid adult prices for them all week for everything else. For context, they are 16 & 17 and both are >6 ft tall. Needless to say they weren’t using the kid zone or the playground as the other children were. These expectations should have been clearly explained upon booking.

I couldn't say enough wonderful things about The Occidental. An all-inclusive resort in the jungle is as good as it gets for my husband and I. If you enjoy nature, wildlife, and the convenience of an all inclusive resort, you will love this property! Even though the grounds are huge, the buildings being spread out make it feel peaceful and intimate. We're also fans of walking and hiking so we enjoyed that it took some time to get around. I highly recommend the unlimited Xcaret experience as there is so much to do you could spend every day there exploring! We don't usually stay in the same resort because we like to travel to new destinations each time, but we would absolutely return to The Occidental just to spend time at the resort. And ofcourse the staff were all wonderful! You will love The Occidental if you enjoy: -nature -wildlife -snorkeling -a chill and peaceful atmosphere -being active -friendly people You will not enjoy The Occidental if you are: -A loud drunk partying 22 year old -A wet blanket

The carts providing transportation around the property come around every 15-20 minutes. The resort is huge, therefore it is needed more often. The resort offered a lean and friendly atmosphere. One of the highlights of the property was the abundance of wildlife, including iguanas and monkeys, which added a delightful touch to the surroundings. However, I was slightly disappointed by the flamingos’ cramped living conditions, with small, dirty water areas and limited space to roam. Additionally, it was disheartening to see parrots with clipped wings confined to a sitting area throughout the day. Despite these concerns, the food was excellent, and the resort boasted numerous swimming pools, providing ample opportunities for relaxation and recreation. Overall, while there were some drawbacks, the hotel provided a pleasant and enjoyable experience.

The proximity to the park was great with two entrances in/out. The AC/hot water worked well, safe wouldn’t open one day but quick response to fix it. The staff at the restaurants were helpful and friendly. The front desk not so much. Had to wait on a line each day to make a reservation, and only allowed so many reservations per stay. We stayed 7 nights and were allowed 4 dinner reservations. The reservations started at 7am and the wait was at least an hour if you got there after 7! The restaurants were horrible! We’ve been traveling to Mexico for the past ten years as we love the food and this resort disappointed. Our 7 y/o likes to cook and he can cook better food then what was served to us. The pizza dough was raw, the Italian restaurant risotto was over salted and looked like Mac and cheese with rice, my husband’s steak looked like a tv dinner mystery meat. The seafood restaurant served tuna from a can as tuna tartar. Another aspect of the restaurants was a dress code for the men that was only enforced for non-white men. We saw Hispanic men get told to change meanwhile there were white men in shorts/flip flops and one in both shorts and sandals allowed to sit and eat. To see that was upsetting. If there’s a dress code that is enforced it should be across the board for ALL men. The nightly shows and resort singer were nice and enjoyable. The Myan ritual was beautiful! The sports was fun to do with the kids. We saw bandaids floating in the pool. Overall we’d never go back

The property is in a beautiful area and surrounded by trees and animals. Really enjoyed walking around and finding different animals all around the property. We were not able to go to any of the restaurants as they were always full and you had to make reservations the day off and early in the morning. This hotel has easy access to the Xcaret park and they have many tours available. Overall a good experience and would come back.

Overall a 3 out of 5. Pros: Xcaret Park. You can’t beat the proximity…it is literally in the park which is nice if you are with kids. I recommend staying 2 days max and get the 2 day basic pass. Think Disneyland and the convenience of staying at the Disneyland hotel. My teenage daughter and I enjoyed the park. Nature: animals, birds, and lush greenery was a plus. That’s where the pros end. Cons: This is not a 5 star hotel. 3 stars at best. Rooms are small and unremarkable even in the “Royal” area. Arrival: I’ve been to many resorts and Check in is generally easy . Not here. I STOOD in line over 45 minutes no drinks upon arrival. The attendant checking me in was less than pleasant. I had to ask her was she ok, because her energy was off. After my complaints, she gave us an upgrade but didn’t give me the “wristband” associated with that area which led staff to believe I was in the wrong place. Food: Buffet style. Just ok. Not the best, and not the worse. Long wait to make reservations for the specialty restaurants. Reservations open at 7AM by 8 AM reservations booked. Pool: Get there early enough to get a chair. Same with private beach.Closed at 8PM. Staff: Generally nice. You will get hit up constantly 4 a timeshare presentation. ugh! Location: Resort is remote and a taxi (no car share) into Playa’s primary hotel/restaurant zone will run about $45 each way. If with a group forget about it. Value: With all that said. You get what you pay for. Spend the $$ 4 true 5 star.
