![Villevêque (Maine-et-Loire) Le château. D'abord maison forte aux XIIe-XIIIe siècles, le château perd son caractère défensif au XVe siècle. Le château de Villevêque sera la résidence épiscopale des évêques d'Angers. L'évêque d'Angers, Hubert de Vendôme, évoquera vers 1025 cette résidence épiscopale. Hubert avait succédé à Renaud II mort à Embrun*, alors qu'il se rendait à Jérusalem. Aucun successeur n'avait été désigné du vivant de Renaud II. Le comte d'Anjou, Foulques Nerra, qui avait des vues sur l'héritage considérable que Renaud II tenait de son père, avait donc les mains libres pour choisir le nouvel évêque. Foulques va alors retrouver le vicomte Hubert de Vendôme afin de négocier avec lui l'accession de son fils à l'épiscopat angevin. Après un an de discussion sur les modalités concernant l'héritage de Renaud II, un accord est trouvé : le jeune évêque Hubert endossait juridiquement l'accaparement de l'héritage de Renaud. Il apparaît donc que Hubert de Vendôme a servi d'intermédiaire au comte d'Anjou, en accaparant les alleux de son prédécesseur, puis en les redistribuant, au nom de l'évêché, à différents chevaliers probablement proches du comte d'Anjou. C'est ainsi que la région des Mauges quittera le Poitou pour intégrer définitivement l'Anjou. Le nouvel évêque "clerc plus expert, peut-être, à manier l'épée qu'à prier Dieu" (L. Halpen), resta un féodal et n'hésita à prendre les armes contre l'archevêque de Tours. Hubert de Vendôme fera reconstruire la cathédrale d'Angers qui avait été en partie détruite par un incendie. La nouvelle cathédrale subira un autre incendie en 1032, elle ne sera remise en état qu'à la fin du XIe siècle. L'évêque Hubert de Vendôme résidera régulièrement à Villevêque, jusqu'à son décès en mars 1047. Eusèbe Brunon (Eusebius Bruno) fut élu, à l'initiative du comte d'Anjou Geoffroy II, pour lui succéder. En 1317, Guillaume Le Maire, évêque d'Angers, prêtera serment au roi de France, Philippe V (Philippe V le Long), dans le château de Villevêque. Ce même Guillaume Le Maire avait participé au Concile de Vienne* en octobre 1311, sous Philippe le Bel, concile qui verra la condamnation des Templiers. L'évêque d'Angers sera un partisan de la condamnation. En 1428, l'évêque d'Angers Hardouin du Bueil reçoit 1000 écus de Yolande d'Aragon (épouse de Louis II d'Anjou), pour la rénovation du château. Durant son ministère, l'évêque Hardouin du Bueil s'élèvera avec force contre les déviations de son temps. En particulier il condamnera le mariage consanguin de Gilles de Rais avec sa cousine Catherine de Thouars*. Après les destructions de la guerre de Cent Ans, l'évêque d'Angers Jean II de Beauvau* , fait reconstruire entièrement le château, entre 1448 et 1465. Grâce à la protection de l'évêque, Jean Balue*, fera une rapide carrière, secrétaire et aumonier du roi Louis XI en 1463, évêque d'Evreux en 1465. Il évincera son protecteur, du siège épiscopal d'Angers, qui sera destitué par le pape en 1467. Jean Balue conseillera au roi l'abolition de la Pragmatique Sanction ce qui lui vaudra d'être fait cardinal par le pape Paul II. Après bien des erreurs, Louis XI le fera arrêter le 23 avril 1469. Jean Balue ne sera libéré qu'en 1480, sous condition de quitter la France. L'excommunication de Jean de Beauveau sera levée en 1476, mais il ne retrouva son diocèse d'Angers que comme administrateur (en double avec Auger de Brie). Au début du XVIe siècle, un des derniers évêques à résider à Villevêque fut François de Rohan. En 1523, les idées de Luther arrivent en Anjou. Les vicaires généraux du diocèse d'Angers publient un monitoire contre les personnes lisant les écrits prônant la réforme. L'année suivante l'évêque François de Rohan, menaçe les contrevenants d'excommunication et ordonne la destruction des ouvrages incriminés. François de Rohan décédera en 1536. L'inefficacité des mesures qu'il avait prises est telle qu'à l'automne 1539, les premières condamnations sont prises à l'encontre des protestants angevins. Les bûchers ne tardent pas à suivre, en 1552 à Saumur, en 1556 à Angers. Le château sera vendu comme bien national sous la révolution. En 2003, la ville d'Angers recevra le château en legs, avec l’ensemble des œuvres d’art collectionnées par son dernier propriétaire privé, un industriel fortuné. Embrun (Hautes-Alpes) dont d'ailleurs, l'évéché fut fondé par Marcellin, d'origine berbère d'Afrique du Nord. Renaud partit sur la route de Jérusalem, qu'il n'a jamais atteint, la mort le surprenant en chemin le 12 juin 1005. (Cartulaire Noir de Saint-Maurice, n° XXVIII. Embrun, Hautes-Alpes) Le concile de Vienne (en Isère) verra, outre la dissolution de l'Ordre du Temple: - Le rejet de la réforme de l'évêque de Mende, Guillaume Durand, réforme qui remet en cause l'absolutisme de Rome, prône le mariage des prêtres, et la gratuité des sacrements. 
- La querelle au sein des franciscains, entre ceux qui voyaient dans les voeux de pauvreté une obligation stricte et ceux qui y voyaient de simples recommandations. 
- La condamnation du mouvement des béguinages. Mouvement de femmes qui sans être conscrées menaient une vie monacale. La béguine Marguerite Porete fut brûlée le 1er juin 1310, à Paris, en place de Grève, pour son ouvrage "Le miroir des âmes simples et anéanties et qui seulement demeurent en vouloir et désir d'amour". Malgré sa condamnation le livre aura beaucoup de succès , en particulier dans la vallée de la Loire. 
- Le concile discute d'une nouvelle croisade, et demande aux princes chrétiens d'interdire les pèlerinages sur les tombeaux de "saints" musulmans, ainsi que les appels à la prière.
 Gilles de Rais aurait du en réalité s'appeler Gilles de Laval. Son père Guy de Laval avait une arrière grand tante fort riche, Jeanne Chabot dame de Rais, dite Jeanne la Sage. Elle n'avait pas d'enfant, et pour continuer le nom de Rais, elle propose au jeune Guy de Laval de l'adopter. Guy accepte et devient ainsi Guy de Rais. Ce marché ne fait pas l'affaire du neveu de Jeanne, Jean de Craon, qui proteste. Jeanne Chabot reconnait ses torts, déshérite Guy et fait son testament en faveur de Jean de Craon. Guy attaque le testament et fait un procès, mais aucun tribunal n'ose trancher en faveur de l'une ou l'autre des deux grandes familles. La guerre semble inévitable. Finalement Jean de Craon a une idée : marier Guy avec sa fille Marie. Ainsi Jean de Craon peut garder l'héritage qu'il transmettra à sa fille et Guy redevient de Rais. Gilles de Rais naîtra un an plus tard de cet combinaison d'héritage, dans le château de Champtocé. Dès sa naissance il est immensément riche. Le jeune Gille mène la vie d'un riche seigneur écoutant avec plaisir les récits guerriers, en particulier ceux concernant sont grand oncle par les Laval : Du Guesclin. Malheureusement, son père Guy de Laval meurt dans une partie de chasse à Machecoul en 1415. Sa mère suivra quelques mopis après. Gilles est orphelin à onze ans. C'est Jean de Craon qui deviendra son éducateur. Il confiera le jeune Gilles à ses serviteurs. L'enfant est livré à lui-même et donne libre cours à ses mauvais penchants, la violence et les mauvaises lectures, en particulier Suétone. Un jour sa gouvernante, Guillemette la Drapière le surprend dans sa chambre et ce qu'elle en rapporte à Jean de Craon décide celui-ci à le marier. Il va trouver la cousine de Gilles, Catherine de Thouars. Elle a seize ans. Mais l'église ne peut admettre ce mariage entre cousins. Jean de Craon imagine donc de compromettre la jeune fille, ce qui obligera l'église à admettre le mariage. Le père de la jeune fille décédant à propos, celle-ci est enlevée et emmenée au château. Les deux jeunes gens passent la nuit ensemble. Il faut donc que Gilles répare l'outrage, et le 30 novembre 1420, un prêtre procède à l'union. L'évêque Hardouin de Bueil avertit de l'enlèvement et du mariage décrète que le mariage est nul. Jean de Craon envoie alors une ambassade à Rome et obtient l'Indulgence du Pape. Mais le Pape exige la séparation physique des deux époux. Le 24 avril 1422, Gilles de Rais est donc officiellement marié, mais séparé de sa femme, ce qui ne le dérange pas, il préfère manifestement la compagnie des hommes. Sa vie dissolue, ne l'empêcha pas d'avoir une carrière fulgurante : conseiller du roi, évêque, cardinal, il devint même archevêque en 1468. Par ses intrigues, il sera la cause de la décapitation de Charles de Melun, faussement accusé par La Balue, d'avoir entretenu des intelligences avec le duc de Bretagne. Par la suite, Jean Balue sera accusé de trahison par Louis XI, à la suite de la découverte d'un courrier compromettant avec Charles le Téméraire. Il sera arrêté à Amboise et enfermé à Tours, puis à Onzain, et Loches où il restera enchaîné pendant 11 ans.
