Incredible views, big clean rooms, horrible food
Beautiful hotel, incredible views from the rooms, great balconies in every room, clean and comfortable, multilingual staff and great service. Worse food I have received in the 28 years I have been travelling for business to Brazil. I tried three times and each meal was worse than the last. I got a Cesarean salad with chicken and it came in a plastic container with wilted lettuce. Then I ordered a "quente" which was a sandwich with old thick bread, one slice of ham and one of cheese, it was 90% old bread, then I ordered a fish burger, again old bread, cold backed french fries, disgusting sauces. There is a mall with good restaurants three blocks away but at night by myself, I did not want to walk three blocks in Rio alone, so I had no choice but to eat there. If you want to lose weight, then this is a great choice because the hotel is really nice!

was a nice hotel but as we got there right after carnival they didn't have enough time to thoroughly clean the room but were able to remove obstruction from tub and for the inconvenience they comped our one meal which was nice of them

Nice but should be a 4-4.5* not a 5*
It was a last hour booking. I was to stay somewheres else and it was a disaster... I took out Hotels.com to see what was available now... on carnival Saturday??? Only a hand full of hotels came up. This was the highest rating for under 300$ a night. It’s a nice place. I stayed at the grand melia Nacional the weekend prior which is next door. Unfortunately, the melia 5* for 230$ was way above the Pullman’s 300$ 5*. I did not find a gym. And the food was ok, not fantastic.

A place that have all your needs cover
I did not go to Rio to enjoy the beach. I have personal things to do. The hotel is family oriented , the staff is very friendly, there is a safe in the room , EXCELLENT food, 24 hrs room service, security..a comfortable room with a very nice hot shower.The hotel have several spots where you can have a meeting, formal or informal . All I needed was covered. Then if you are picky , yes, there is some upgrades that can be done in the building , but are minimal things that Im sure they are aware and working on. I feel like I was HOME .If you need to feel safe-comfy and like the good restaurants thats the place to be!!

Better than average Rio’s Hotels
In general very good stay. Hotel is clean, has stunning location and very well trained staff. View from the room is breathqtaking! Very good wi-fi (and free) Breakfast is good ,just found that breads could be fresher. In the room there was no tea making facilities and water takes too lomg to get hot (not very good for water saving) Toileteries are not good ( cheap stuff)

Nice hotel, far away from touristy area of Rio
The beach was right on the other side of the street. Not many restaurants around so you may have to drive about 10 along the beach to Ipanema, Leblon or Copacabana for those shops but the drive was worth it as it was very scenic. Definitely recommend to rent a car. You will avoid all the tourists from Rio.

Not a 5 star hotel!
When I first got to the hotel, the lobby made the hotel look extravagant then it really was. Unfortunately, once I stepped off the elevator the place look like a cheap motel that charge by the hour. I ask for my room to be clean for days and every time I came back my room was not touched.the pics that are advertised falsely depict the way the hotel actually looks. their menu was very basic for a "five star" hotel the only positive to this hotel is that the beach is across the street.

We chacked in quite late, but it took at least ten minutes due a lot of guests and just two man on the reception. the room where poor equiped. No iron, no tissues, no shoes, no coffee or tea. Not even a complimentary drinkingwater. We had three small water from the mini bar for a lot of money. On one day we made a trip. I asked the staff for a taxi. They got me a private car and he took three times the money of normal taxi as we asked for.

Good Hotel.
I'm used to stay in 5 Stars Hotel. So I know how it looks and feels. This so is not up standard. You can hear the conversation from the other rooms, restaurant is not 5St, the Fitness is not from the hotel and it's like 3world. The people at reception are good and there's a shopping centre near. Great news is parking is free .

Dirty bedrooms & dirty breakfast rooms
Very dirty Hotel. No sauna and no restaurants. All closed due to financial crisis hotel is in and many staff laid off. No premium tv really available either hence no football. Dirty room food poisoning and bed bugs. Peeling enamel and rotting doors and carpets everywhere! This hotel appears to therefore be below 5 star standard.

Never ever stay in this hotel!!!
Worst 5 star hotel I've stayed: orange water; mouldy smell; asked for an adapter, got after two hours; terrible wifi connection, couldn't even send emails with one page PDF; worse customer service, didn't know, or worse, didn't want to tell how to find a supermarket; I checked out one day earlier!!!

The room was dirty, not well kept and I was participating in an event at the hotel and they lost my marketing materials (even though they were received and signed for by hotel staff). Difficult access to the hotel and not very safe neighbourhood.

This hotel doesn't count on return guests
The location and especially the views from this hotel are great - built perpendicular to the beach, every room has a great view of the beach, sunrise/sunset, and the Tijuca forest. As for the hotel itself (coming f/ someone who has traveled to Brazil numerous times), the service left a lot to wish for. Don't bother calling front desk, given all they do is transfer you to different departments until you are back talking to the same person you originally called - in my scenario we were given a room where the AC did not work (while outside temp was ~ 90-100deg Farenheight) and had asked for an outlet adaptor to be able to charge our phones. Front desk quickly made not that we could buy an adaptor at the gift shop, though when you are paying US $1000 per night, they better be able to provide you with an adaptor if they expect to get a foreign clientele. We were told someone was going up to our room to fix the AC all afternoon, we finally gave up on waiting and decided to enjoy the beach for the day. Coming back from our New Year's Party - the AC was still not working, the room was incredibly hot and humid, it wasn't until I (once again) went downstairs and complained about the horrible service we were receiving for a so called "luxury hotel" that they provided us with a different room. I do not recommend this hotel for anyone to stay.

THe worst flaw in this hotel is the location. It is an expensive cab ride to anywhere. So if you were in Rio for twosome, then its great, but if you want any museums, nightlife, or other restaurants or touristic spots forget it. The entry and restaurants were of first quality, but the rooms were drab,old, and used. The service was the same as the hotel. The first floor sign ins and restaurant service were exceptional, but in 5 days, our room was only made up twice. No new towels nor was the bed made.

Overall this hotel was decent. The staff are all pretty friendly and the pool area in particular is lovely. My only real frustration stemmed from the fact that there was construction taking place on the floor above my room that would start with loud hammering at 8 am in the morning and continue on until 5 pm in the evening - no fun when you have arrived after a long overnight flight and you want to have a nap before a long afternoon of work.

Beautiful hotel and views from the rooms
The stay was great. The hotel staff were very helpful and attentive when required. Beautiful hotel setting and interior. A little far from sights, but anywhere you go in Rio you need a taxi, and they are relatively cheep. Room were impeccably clean and newly furnished.

Discovered this hotel on a day when most other hotels in rio were ridiculously expensive.. location is in sao conrado which is a little off the main tourist tract,but this hotel offers excellent value. polite staff, good facilities.. The beach is just a few 100 steps away.

Although this hotel has a high rating on Hotels.com, it has much lower ratings on other travel sites. I only stayed here because there were no rooms available in Barra. The hotel exterior was being renovated, so the balcony was closed and covered in debris. The view from the hotel was blocked by the construction covering. Inside the room was worse. There was a mini-fridge, it was stocked, but broken, so the drinks were warm. There's a slot for tissues in the bathroom, but no tissues. There were no washcloth-size towels. The air-conditioning barely worked, taking over 24 hours to cool the room to a reasonable temperature. The tub lacked a plug, so there was no way to take a bath. The water pressure was high, so much so that when I turned on the sink it sprayed powerfully down the drain, spraying black drain scum all over the sink and counter. There were paid and free Internet options, I tried both and they were equally horrible and unusable. I'd rate this amongst some of the worst hotel internet I've encountered in my travels worldwide. I could not get any of the speed testing websites to load without timing out. The room and furnishings were old, the carpet stained and worn. The bed sheets seemed clean and the bed and pillows were comfortable. The location is near the beach, but there is very little in the immediate area to see or do. Breakfast was included and was good. I'd recommend against this hotel overall. I'd go for something in Barra, Ipanema, or Copacabana instead.

Royal Tulip (Former Intercontinental Hotel)
I have stayed at this hotel on many occassions for business. It was formerly the Intercontinental hotel. It is out of the way of the very crowded beaches and offers some nice beach going. It is only 10 to 15 minutes from were all the action is at Lablan and about 25 minutes from Coca Cabana.

Nice view, poor services!
Excelent view in front of a nice beach, good restaurant, but bad services. Poor internet connection and very expensive (U$D 20 per day and it doesn´t work), they didn´t have the reservation into the system and took 2 days fixed it up. You need to compain all the time to get things done. It is close to Copacabana and Leblon, but the traffic is terribe. I would never come back to this hotel.

Great Customer Service
This was an emergency trip for a family illness. Under this stressful condition, the InterContinental was very helpful. Their customer service was fantastic. They helped with booking issues and adjustments, took my broken cell phone to see if it could be fixed and took care to get us bilingual taxi drivers. The hotel is in a beautiful location and on a less-used, but a beautful beach.

Close to great beach
Very happy with our stay after spending some time in the busier area of Copacabana / Ipanema. This hotel was an excellent choice & we had a great view of Sao Conrado beach & hotel pool from our room. The pool area had plenty of chairs & small tables as well as a bar & snack bar. The lovely beach & boardwalk was only a two minute walk from the hotel. The room was very comfortable & the only complaint I would have was that the carpet could have done with a cleaning - everything else in the hotel was very clean & well kept. This hotel had a great buffet breakfast with lots of variety of hot & cold foods. The hotel free mini bus was great for getting into Leblon / Ipanema / Copacobana beaches & the final stop was at the Rio Sul - a main shopping centre which then made it easy to access other areas of Rio de Janeiro. Lots of taxis & buses outside the main entrance. A special touch from the hotel was the surprise arrival of a birthday cake & candies for my husband's big birthday. All in all a wonderful Brazilian holiday

This hotel is in a beautiful location but is far away from the main tourist sights. Hotel shuttle service is inadequate. There are better choices near Ipanema or Copacabana. Hotel staff was much less helpful and also not as engaging as in other hotels in Brazil. Breakfast was excellent. Style is dated and uninspiring but is made up for by the beauty of the location.

This hotel didnt live up to the InterContinental standars I normally expect. The staff was not very helpful, the hotel shuttle didn't operate to the city as frequent as I would hope, but the pool area was very nice with a great view. The hotel restaurants even closed on odd days of the week and no one seemed to know their scheude! That and the very nice mall down the street were the biggest upsides to the hotel.

This Hotel was a Nightmare!!!!
I just returned from a fabulous trip to South America but had the misfortune of staying in this hotel my last 3 days in Rio. The following are the issues that came up: 1) Little did I know this would be a hint of things to come - after repeatedly going to the third floor with via elevator, the doors would not open. Had to go down and have the staff escort me up 2) Check in took almost a full half hour despite the fact that they knew our group was coming months before 3) Air conditioning is marginal if non existant. Not much difference from stifiling humidity on the deck to stifling humidity in the room. 4) The toilet in my room was broken and did not flush 5) The shower leaked all night and would not turn off despite my best efforts 6) Although plentiful the breakfast was beyond marginal. Stuck with the fruit 7) I requested a wake up call the second day I was there - None came-I always bring a travel alarm as back up for these situations so I KNOW they didn't call 8) When I went to the front desk the next day to report toilet/shower/air issues the staff were surly and uninterested. Had to force the issue. The only reason I think things were fixed is the maid probably couldn't take the smell from the toilet! 9) Asked for a fan and never got one. 10) When they finally did fix the toilet and shower, I went to take a shower the next evening and the handle fell off! 11) The third day found dead bugs in the room 12) My companions reported the same air conditioning issues in their room as well as a broken balcony railing 13) Another companion reported that the cleaning staff missed her room and she did not have towels etc. It just never seemed to end with this hotel. It was a nightmare!!!!! Lots of defered maintenance both inside and out. I usually don't write a review unless I really feel strongly about a hotel either good or bad.....unfortunately this one is really bad. Hopefully you won't have the misfortune of staying here!!!!!

Over priced and undervalued.
We went to 3 Intercontinentals in 3 countries on this trip. The one in Rio was the worst! This is 'maybe' holiday inn standard. It was upgraded maybe a couple centuries ago and the rooms where pathetic.

Great Location, Great Service, Great Experience
My husband and I completely enjoyed our stay at the InterContinental in Rio. We ventured up into the favela for dinner every night and the people were welcoming. We found several fantastic restaurants at a great price. Will return next year!

Fantastic location and great staff, but feelgood factor massively marred in hotel by fleecing on all extras like internet (incidentally wifi login avail in your room only); breakfast as well. Its the attitude that is really demoralising. Cheaper hotels give wifi for free (can there be any excuse at all for 7 UK pounds for 30 mins?), not everyone at a conference or hol has an expense account. I try for local, offsite, wifi but not avail in this location. I actively avoid expensive hotels for this reason, you feel that they just want your money (funny that).
