NL's Hidden Gem
Rencontre East is Newfoundland's hidden gem! Nestled in the mountains with a beautiful ocean view, the Ackley cabin is the perfect weekend retreat. About 3 hours west of St. John's you catch the ferry at Bay L'Argent which is about another 2 hours. If you manage to get the ferry on a clear day you need to sit on deck because the views are amazing! Paul, Brian and Little Bear took us on the Ackley Mine Tour which is well worth the $75! The views, even on a rainy day, were breathtaking. You really feel like you're in a national park. The second day we were there it was sunny so we walked the trails and the community and took a bizillion pics ... like I said, the views are amazing!!! I would set your alarm for sunrise ... you won't be disappointed with the sunrise from the Ackley cabin, even on a rainy morning!
I would recommend you bring/buy water. We arrived Friday night at high tide and apparently when the tide is super high it can bring ocean water into the community's water source so we had no water to drink the first night/morning. Other than that, our stay was comfortable and relaxing and we loved it!
Thanks again to Paul, Debbie, Brian and of course, Little Bear for making our weekend getaway so lovely. We can't wait to return and explore more of Rencontre East.

Isolated and loving it!
We had a terrific time at Ackley House. Hot dogs and chips on the lake tour was a highlight. But nothing beat cod jigging! A once in a life time experience you'll want to do again and again. Thanks Paul and Debbie!!!!

We couldn't have asked for a better get away
We were upgraded to Charter House which is a very charming traditional NL house built over the water. Waking up in the morning in a exceptionally comfortable bed hearing the lapping water and watching the morning sky through the narrow was like being in a movie.
The house is very well equipped and the two stores in town had everything we forgot to bring in terms of food.
The hosts were superb. They were very knowledgeable and helpful. I would definitely recommend Roncontre East as a place to visit.
