For the price in China, this hotel was not worth it. A water bed? Also, the shower did not properly work and the front desk staff was pretty unhelpful. Wouldn't have expected anything too fancy, but for 20-30$, you could easily find similar accommodation in Qingdao.

A unique experience
I always return to this hotel. It is truly a unique experience. Every room is different. The staff is friendly and there is always someone that speaks English. The facility is getting a little bit old, but it is very well maintained. There are many excellent restaurants and coffee shops within walking distance. The buffet breakfast is one of the best that I have seen in China.

Great stay in a cool hotel
We read a mixed set of reviews expecting it to be beautiful but musty, but instead were treated to a lovely and creatively designed room, very clean furnishings and lovely staff! We had a thoroughly enjoyable stay of three nights here, it's in a safe and good district, and the hotel itself has a very pleasant atmosphere. Sometimes the amenities were not completely well furbished, but we only had to notify the staff and they very quickly and courteously helped us out.

Great location and tries hard but needs more work
Location is great and hotel has lots of character. Service at the front desk is nice and helpful. But their cleaning staff needs more training - details in room not cleaned well and they tried to say I used one of their lotions which I definitely did not. If you get room on the first floor, ask for a dehumidifier which helps a lot. Overall, for price and location and character I would still recommend!

An inexpensive place to stay in Qingdao
The hotel is interesting, but the room was small and the air conditioning did not cool the room. The bed had only a comforter and no sheet. Checking in was a bit difficult, since there were no English speaking staff, and minor/irrelevant issues seemed to be exaggerated. In the end, everything worked out OK, but it seemed more difficult than most other hotels that we used.

One of a kind hotel.
This is a very unusual hotel. Almost every room is different, and the hotel is decorated and furnished in traditional Chinese style. It has a much more intimate, friendly feel than the major hotels. The service is excellent, and there is usually someone that speaks English. They have a breakfast that is about the best I ever saw in China. There is a great variety of Chinese and western breakfast food. The location is good, with many restaurants in the area. It is about a 1 km walk to the ocean near the Qingdao Sailing Center, site of the 2008 Olympic sailing events. It is easy to get a taxi by walking out to Minjiang Road. Don't be confused by the hotel address which is Minjiang 3 Road. I have stayed in this hotel six times on trips to Qingdao, and I am very satisfied.

Lovely place and lovely staff
Although the exterior is a little plain, the hotel is lovely inside, with many beautiful art objects. The staff couldn't be friendlier or more helpful. Someone is always around who speaks adequate English. The hotel is within walking distance of the bus line and Western restaurants. The breakfast is very Asian, so not everybody will want to buy it. The only caution I have is that my room was VERY small, with no view at all (more hotel rooms faced my window). It was fine for me, a single traveler, but even a couple, I think, would need more space. I would definitely stay here again.

Beautiful, Unique & Artistic Hotel
The Laozhuancun China Community Art and Culture Hotel is like a Contemporary Arts Gallery and the restaurant is like a Circular Music Hall. Avant-garde architecture, every direction you look is a work of art, rich in local culture, interesting artifacts and the lobby vibrant in the Shandong provincial colours. Buffet breakfast or buffet dinner for in-house guest is the price of a cup of coffee in Sydney, extensive a-la-carte menu available as well. You'll have to be crazy not to eat at the restaurant. I had three breakfasts there and I love the variety of food. I booked two nights in a King room. Before I left, I asked for a tour of the rooms which were all so different and so tasteful. I deliberately asked for an attic room for when I returned to Qingdao for one extra night. The whole ceiling in the bedroom was slanted glass which took a bit to get used to at first but I enjoyed that attic experience. The sheets and pillows were beautiful, the room new, comfortable and very artistic. All the staff were very helpful and sensitive to my needs - especially Yang Luying from reception. It was my first trip to Qingdao and I travelled alone and I was late rushing to the airport for a long international flight back to Sydney via Singapore. The service of Laozhuancun Hotel was first class. I was so glad I found such a beautiful and unique hotel.

Great experience for first timer to China. The hotel staff was very friendly and most spoke a bit of English. The assistant director is from the States and was more than kind and helpful. Made a big difference in my enjoyment of the trip. The breakfast in the attached restaurant was a wonderful buffet style with a wide variety of choices. Would definitely stay here on next trip!

Overall, a nice change from the typical business type hotel. This hotel is infused with a lot of china culture elements throughout the hotel decor. Room was small but acceptable for a short 2 night stay. Enjoyed the buffet breakfast as the spread was rather good for a local hotel. Also ate a dinner at the same restaurant and enjoyed it too. Prices were reasonable , food was nice and there was also nightly performences of Chinese opera.

Location is ok, though it will be much better once the metro system currently being constructed is complete. We arrived the first day of the Qingdao Beer Festival from the train station at 5pm on a Friday, and it took us 2 hours via taxi to get to the hotel! Traffic was terrible. Hotel staff helped us figure out what public buses to take, and though they could only provide a chinese language map, the map included bus routes on it which we found essential. Housekeeping service was hit and miss. One day they didn't empty our garbage, clean our used tea mugs, or give us new large bath towels, even though they took the ones I had hung to dry to reuse. When we left on a Tuesday at 10am, hotel staff told us they couldn't call us a taxi to the train station due to the beer festival. We found that hard to believe, but weren't able to hail one down on the street ourselves. Luckily we had enough time to take the bus and traffic wasn't as bad as when we arrived. The hotel provided us with tickets for the breakfast buffet, which was pretty good, but every morning we got hassled, getting asked for two tickets even though we were only given one per day. Language barrier was a big problem. We ended up not having to pay extra for both of us to eat breakfast, but it was really annoying that it was an issue every morning and caused so much confusion. The hotel includes a tea house and artist shops, which was nice. Lots of good restaurants in the area.

Nice hotel that need a little more maintenance
Booked a "Harmony residence" room from 12 - 16 July. As I was traveling alone, room size was alright. However, the King bed was actually 2 single bed joined together and the spring of one of the bed was making noise, hence I can only sleep on one side. One of the hanging light was buzzing away and I have to turn it off. Television channels "run" when I was turning down the volume and the shower head drip water once a while after shower makes it difficult to sleep sometimes. Shower and toilet was separated which is good but shower area only comes in curtain which might not be convenient if you are traveling with friends (my local friend have to wait for me in the lobby while I took a quick bath). The room that I was given was a facing internal building room. There is a distance from the window to the wall and I was able to open the window, plus I was on the 3rd floor, hence there was enough daylight and I have no problem with this. Wi-fi in the room was strong and the general one in the lobby is good as well. Service of staff was good and I have no problems with them. They even serve my local friends with tea when he was waiting for me in the lobby. Although my room comes with breakfast but I do not have the chance to taste it as I woke up late.

Breakfast was OK. Plenty of local food around area. 15minutes walk to Jusco and Carrerfour supermart. Opposite Carrerfour, there's airport bus service at half hour interval and cost Rmb 20 only.Takes about 45mins to 1 hr to reach Qingdao airport. Hotel with antique decos and surroundings, feels comfortable. Can buy things on display around all areas.

I am very happy with this hotel choice although the room was a little small and the plumbing could have been stronger. Very quaint decor - full of character and a great neighbourhood for food. Away from the old city centre that can be reached by a 10-15 minute taxi ride..

Just great, but.....!
I love this place! However, I had a few little "problems" on this, my third visit: I booked the cheapest room, which meant that I had a room with a window only into the atrium rather than the outside. I was inundated with cigarette smoke whenever I opened the window and the AC did not to seem to work very well. The lighting in the room was extremely low to the point that it was hard to do any reading or work on my laptop....! Apart from all that, it would be a great place to stay.

Unique Hotel wiith good location but poor services
Hotel location is very good. Surrounded by good foods operating 24 hours. Bus transportation is nearby too. Hotel Staffs were not really helpful. Free Wifi was down and when we raised this issue, hotel staff did not make effort to render their assistance. When asked for directions, they gave us the wrong information, lucky we managed to asked the locate outside. Breakfast is bascially everyday the same, not really fantastic. Most funny thing is breakfast is only for one person when we paid 2 persons price for the room. You have to pay RMB38 which we think is not worth it at all. The Management need to improve on their staffs' services. Overall, the hotel is unique, clean and comfortable.

Great Chinese Hotel!
I decided to try this hotel due to the great reviews and the price. I did not want to stay with a western hotel chain. I have stained in a few Chinese hotels and I know the standard is different and I accept that. But this hotel has a higher standard. It is very nicely done, the incense burning in the Lobby and shops area is nice. The tea shop is great. My rate included breakfast and it was vary nice. The restaurant's food and service were also great. It is about a 20 minute walk to the water. I will definitely stay there again.

Very good for the money. The staff was as helpful as could be. Some spoke english well and those that couldn't got someone who could. The included breakfast was fantastic. The bed was typical Chinese. Hard but most of the clientele are Asian and they have slept on the floor on mats for ages. Would definitely stay again if I'm ever in Qingdao again. It was quiet and tucked away from the busy streets. It compares to a budget rate hotel chain like comfort in or so in the states but lots cheaper no pool and much better breakfast. It is close to bus stops too.

A unique and charming hotel
We were very pleased with our stay at the China Community Art and Culture Hotel. In spite of the rather odd name, the hotel is full of charm and comfort. We stayed in the 2-floor 'luxury villa,' which was ideal for us and our teenage son. There was 1 bathroom on each floor, and also a small sitting room as you entered the suite. We especially loved the uniqueness of our room and the others we saw - they were a lovely combination of traditional Chinese and modern styles. The English-speaking manager helped us with any question we had and couldn't have been nicer.

Unique hotel with its own character
This is a truly unique hotel with features that are unusual when compare to other hotels, be it chain type or individual own. The decorations are most interesting from the front of the hotel, throughout the hotel lobby, and the room itself. The environment is peaceful and quiet giving traveler like myself the feeling of a great vacation. The service is excellent, always ready to lend a helping hand or advice when ask. The breakfeast buffet has both American and Chinese dishes to select from. The 4 rating for comfort of the room is due to its tight quarter although the layout is somewhat amazing for the hotel decorator to fit pieces of furnishing to every available space inside the room, If the room is a bit larger than I would rate the comfort of the room a 5. All in all this hotel deserves consideration if one travel to Qingdao. Highly recommend a visit.

Leisure visit in Qingdao to visit some old friends
We stayed for 2 nights in early October 2012 and as a 1st time user of both Hotels.com and this hotel we were highly satisfied. The rooms were beautifully different from the standard chain hotel "boxes" and the communal areas tastefully arty. The bathrooms were again a bit different, but great, our shower could have done with a bit more oomph however. The breakfast was Chinese style, but with enough western blandness to satisfy my son (13), my 16 year old daughter rates this as the best breakfast on our 2 week China trip, she is a bit more adventurous. The hotel is located in a very local Chinese area of Qingdao, splendid for us as we came to see China. I am not sure how convenient it is for attractions as we were driven everywhere, but the taxis are dirt cheap anyway. The standard of English in the hotel staff was rather low, but much better than my Chinese and added to the authenticity and certainly did not constrain us. If I am back in Qingdao on holiday, I will definitley stay here again

Excellent value for money
Definitely a great and unique boutique hotel. Location is great and convenient. Staff service is warm, welcoming and helpful. For this value, they offer free breakfast, free internet connection and free daily fruit pack. I think it is reasonably the best value I came across so far. The decor may be found a little different from typical western brands, but you'll love it after a while. Daily housekeeping service is fine. Breakfast buffet offers good variety of chinese and western food and beverages, and I particularly love their coffee. I stayed there for 5 nights and will certainly rate it as my top choice for my visit to Qingdao in future.

This hotel is great for anyone who is bored of the big (soulless) international chains. Charming rooms, each with a slightly different character. The staff are very friendly and always ready to help, even in English. The breakfast is also very good, with both Chinese and Western food and drink (including real coffee!). However, I would not recommend an attic room in winter because it gets very cold and the ceiling is made of glass, providing no insulation. Hot showers were good, room heating almost non-existent.

Cool funky hotel in Qingdao
The staff were very friendly and helpful. They were very patient with my broken mandarin (though very few spoke much English). The hotel itself was very cool, with lots of interesting art which they claimed was legitimate Chinese artifacts (some of which I didn't doubt they were). It was the tail-end of winter when we went, so the cool moat around the restaurant and hotel were not filled with water, but I bet it is really neat in the summertime when it is. The breakfast buffet was pretty good, with lots of choices both western and eastern, as well as an espresso machine that made decent espresso. Our room was nice overall, but the heater didn't work, which made for somewhat cold nights (when we were there in early March). We were on the top floor, and we were told that it takes a while for the heat to get up there (but it never really seemed to get there). Each of the rooms are a little different, which is fun. Our shower was my favorite part. Overall a very good hotel, and would highly recommend it for the price, and for the character. When taking a cab there, make sure you give them the written address that the hotel has for you to print out, as most of them think that it is just a restaurant, and they might try to tell you that the hotel part doesn't exist.

I absolutely loved this hotel. The design aesthetic in the lobby and the rooms can't be beat. Staff is very very friendly and very helpful. Their English language is somewhat limited, but between my sketchy Mandarin and their decent English we were able to make things work. Make sure to get one of the large room rooms on what I think might be the 3rd floor or above. Spend the extra money because the small rooms are tiny. I had a great room. My only complaint is that they don't have wifi in the room. You have to get it in the lobby, which during the winter (when I stayed) is tough because they don't the heat on in the lobby. If you plan on spending a lot of time in the old German concession this might not be the place for you. It is a 30 minute bus ride - easy bus ride - that only costs 1 yuan. I had no issues taking the bus.

I could not think of a better price/value option in Qingdao! Should be your first choice if you are tired of the large international chain towers. It has everything from a price included super breakfast (doubles as lunch for me) to great service (free bottled water, fruit for afternoon tee and free internet) and friendly staff. Highly recommended!
