![Located in Powell River, BC. When the U.S. entered WWI in 1917, they embarked on a program of shipbuilding to offset heavy losses to merchant shipping from German U-Boats. As steel plate was in such great demand, government support was given for the building of seagoing ferro-concrete ships.
The WWII concrete ship-building program was more successful than its WWI counterpart. Construction was much stronger due to better cement and more steel reinforcements. Concrete bottoms, which eliminated condensation issues in steel ships, were well-suited for carrying dry cargo. These vessels handled well but were only capable of a maximum of 10 knots. All of the dismantled hulks were proud ships in their day - some fought battles of freedom, while others carried full cargoes along the world’s trade routes.
In the late 1940s, after rust and rot holed many of the original steel ships, Macmillan Bloedel settled on the collection of concrete vessels as a more permanent solution to their breakwater dilemma.

« We loved our stay at the Truffle Hut. The suite was thoughtfully designed and made the stay for our family of 4 quite comfortable, with a cozy kid’s loft and a sofa bed in addition to the main bedroom. « The property is exactly what we needed to wrap up our vacation. It was quiet with a comfy homey vibe. Everything you could want or think of was supplied. The place was spotlessly clean, the beds comfortable. There's a menagerie of animals on the property. We think we saw most of them. Cats came to call for some affection on the deck which was set up with outdoor lounging furniture. There are also chickens, goats, a couple of doggos, at least one cow (although we didn't see it) and some turkeys?...

"Tout était parfait, propre, beau. Nous sommes partis de là pour faire le Pacific Rim et Tofino et à 45 minutes pour le traversier de Nanaimo le lendemain. Le seul problème a été un chien qui hurlait dans une chambre dans la soirée et se faire réveiller par les jappements d’un chien."
