#### This overlook point with a quirky name is one of the top places to go in California for beautiful views of the coastline and the Channel Islands National Park. 

As one of the most loved lookout points on Santa Cruz Island, Potato Harbor is a great place to add to your hiking list when visiting Channel Islands National Park. Peer out to Potato Harbor from the overlook above and you’ll soon see the oblong potato-shape that gave the harbor its name. 

Start your journey to Potato Harbor by taking a trip to Santa Cruz Island, one of the most easily accessible of the Channel Islands. Here, nature thrives in its native habitat, relatively untouched by building works or development. This is unspoiled, awe-inspiring California beauty at its finest.

Pack your hiking boots to make the most of a visit to Potato Harbor, as the Potato Harbor overlook is alongside a hiking trail that starts from Scorpion Beach. Wander along the signed path and look for blooming wildflowers along your way. Take a moment to spot other wildlife, including island foxes, birds, lizards and bees.

Bring your camera to take pictures of the stunning scenery at Potato Harbor. Steep cliffs below make for an incredible view of the harbor itself and other islands further out to sea. Listen for the sounds of seals barking and splashing around in the water. See if you can spot kayakers in the distance paddling their way through the tranquil water. Watch as the wind pushes colorful sailboats along their journey through the harbor.

Visit Potato Harbor at sunset for dramatic views of the orange sky contrasting with the turquoise water. Try to plan your trip for a clear day, as the area is best enjoyed when the visibility is high and the fog levels are low. There is a picnic area near the overlook if you need a short break for refreshments. 

Access Potato Harbor and the Potato Harbor Overlook by boat from the California mainland. Unbelievable place. Charming, beautiful, very good bed, excellent breakfast. New ownership december 2025\. Big plans for improvements. The owner have 2 restaurants in town and 2 other bnbs.
