A warm thank you to Jean, the host, for a cozy, private retreat in a garden. I am so envious of her dahlias! The shower is a must see, and tilled by the host herself. A lovely serene place to stay... Thank you Jean :) Barbara

Cute, homey place with amazing shower
Jean is so sweet, and a kind and welcoming soul. It's perfect for a resting place after long days adventuring. Pros: comfy bedding, ok wifi for remote work, amazing shower (!!!), simple kitchenette, plenty of beautiful literature. Wonderful location, close to rose city park, the grotto, and rocky butte. Cute quirky neighborhood, lots of fun to walk around. Jean is a sweet host. Cons: my cell service was pretty poor (At&t), especially when inside. It can be a little tricky with overhead noise if you are a light sleeper. I used earplugs and it was fine though. Jean was very respectful overall, some noise is just unavoidable. Not a ton of natural light, as it is a basement. There is one large window, but it is partly below ground level.

Quaint and Charming
Jean is fantastic, a lovely, helpful, and charming host! The space is unique, quaint, private, and the bed oh so comfy! I give it a 3 Star Review because: The drawbacks are it's in the basement and getting heavy luggage up and down not easy. The house has a wooden floor and every step the upper occupants make creates a squeak. They're early risers so apt to wake you around 5am. I'm an early riser so it was not much of an issue for me. In the local area there is a large population of transients and homeless people, it did not create a feeling of safety for me when needing to walk my dog in the surrounding blocks. They walk in and around the neighborhood often. If you have a dog, the host's property does not have a space for them to do their business because it is all vegetables and herbs (which I loved), but was inconvenient and not disclosed. You have to walk your dog on the sidewalk around the neighborhood (a one block square) to use neighbors yards (be sure to bring your waste bags to clean up!), which puts you into contact with transients. I did have one encounter that was unnerving as I walked my dog. A lady was in the street and started yelling at me and cursing, I hurried as quick as I could to get back to Jean's street. I would absolutely stay again, but not alone. I say these things because I would have liked to know before I came to a city I was unfamiliar with and believe in transparency, as well as honesty. Lastly, the home has a wonderful history, Jean is an accomplished woman who was very accommodating and absolutely wonderful! I truly enjoyed this space and it was exactly what I needed at this time in my life.

We have been in business 12 years now and have enjoyed hosting many wonderful guests. Unfortunately there are a few, like this guest, that don't seem to appreciate our homestay or our friendly neighborhood where children are being raised. We are sorry for them and wish them well. We also wish that they would mention their concerns while they are staying with us so we might address them. A word on Auntie's Hideaway. Yes it is a lovely daylight basement studio. Also yes, you do here footsteps overhead, albeit stocking feet and kitty pitter-pat. Further, we also have Grandpa's Bunkhouse, a stand alone backyard cabin, where the studio is entirely removed from the main house. We always tell guests about that, explaining that it is more expensive, so that they can make their own choice. In this case, instead of being in Portland to see the sites, the guests who was apparently so unhappy with her stay, spent quite a bit of time in the studio. We are the first to tell guests that our studios at 360 sq ft are not designed for apartment-style living, but instead were built for those who get out and about during the days. In any event, we are glad that our 12 years of business has us reassured that we are doing things right. And again we are sorry that this disgruntled guest seemed to 1)have unrealistic expectations about a daylight studio and 2)couldn't seem to get along with our lovely neighbors when she walked her dog.

Funky, funky but chic!
Absolutely charming little studio. Auntie's pictures and memorabilia give the space a comfy retro feel. A bookcase with a variety of titles complements the space. Jean was a wonderful host and it was a joy to spend a few days in this little nest. I might add, that although the temperature outside got up into the upper 90s, the room was never uncomfortable--and I keep my thermostat at home set on "frostbite"! A great location, with easy access to the airport, or anywhere you need to be. Outside, Jean has amazing gardens to enjoy. Loved it!

Cozy, private, quiet, excellent location
Location, excellent. We explored Portland using only public transportation. Studio was comfy, bed (very important for us) seating area carpeting all very nice. Nights were quiet , no traffic on the street , and dark enough for us to sleep well. Jean was helpful and ready to assist whenever we needed help. Be sure to peruse her cookbooks that are on the bottom shelf. I learned a few new tricks. Kitchenette was adequate for breakfast if cereal and fruit is all you need. Our favorite place was sitting in the front garden by the fig tree enjoying the peace and quiet and shade after a long day of exploration.

Nice location, lots of local shops and cafes. Easy access to freeway. Small basement apartment with natural lighting from egress window in main room, kitchen and bathroom both have low level lighting. Otherwise a comfortable place for 2 if you don't need to spread out much.

Amazing Property, Lovely Host
The property was gorgeous, and we couldn't have asked for a better introduction to Portland. Jean showed us the garden, introduced us to the cats, and gave us a great history of the house and property. It's the little things that make all the difference, and Jean definitely pays attention to the details. The property is in a great location for food and drinks. I would highly recommend this place.

An absolutely beautiful suite, full of historical pieces from the family's past. Modern amenities with a kitchenette and amazing shower. A perfect vacation spot for 2. Cozy, convienient, intimate space close to everything in Portland
We stayed in Auntie's Hideway, which is the studio aparment in the basement of the main house. The amenities were great, good bed, sufficient kitchen, and a great shower. The most memorable thing for me was that it felt like you were really a guest in the house. The apartment is filled with memorabilia of the family, giving us a sense of the place we were in and it's history. For me, that was much more interesting than the sterile atmosphere of some apartments I have stayed in. In addition, Jean is a generous host, filling in the history with personal stories. She also pointed us in the direction of local places to eat and drink coffee, another bonus. As mentioned in other reviews, the studio is convienient, to downtown, to the airport and to the highway to start a day's sightseeing. We will probably check out Grandpa's Bunkhouse on the next visit to Portland. One more thing, the fig tree in front of the house was full of ripe figs which Jean was happy to pluck off the tree for us to savor. Enjoy your stay.

Jean was very personable and made me feel totally comfortable in her home. Auntie's Attic was cozy and spotlessly clean with a wonderful shower in the bathroom.. Jean also has an extensive selection of reading materials available to her guests. The vintage furnishings were charming and homey. I felt as though I was visiting my grandmother's house.

Adorable and cozy!!! Felt right at home!
Stayed here on the last night of our honeymoon and was a perfect tranquil place for us to wind down after a long week of travel. I wanted our final night in Portland to be special and relaxing and Auntie's delivered. Jean, the owner, was so pleasant and interesting, giving us a tour of her beautiful gardens and studio. We were offered sparkling water upon arrival and mint tea as we were leaving. We would have loved to spent more time there, visiting with Jean ... she's a really neat lady!! Grape vines cover the relaxing patio area with the sound of water trickling from her fountain. Fresh vegetables, herbs and flowers growing everywhere make it so feel like home. The studio is very clean and quaint, sweetly decorated in Jean's Aunt's memory. Gorgeous galley and the bathroom is stunning as well. My husband I felt very warm and welcome here. SOOOOO much better than staying in a stuffy hotel!!! I may have to steal some of her decorating ideas!! :) Excellent location to great restaurants and more.... and just 10 minutes to PDX. Will stay here again and highly recommend this hidden gem for a serene and lovely place to stay while in Portland. Dining note: Nearby Cabezon Restaurant and Fish Market a MUST DO for incredible food and drink! Thanks Jean for a lovely night !!!!!

My girlfriend and I loved coming home after a long day of exploring and cozying up in this well-finished, well-appointed, fairly large space. Big bedroom with sitting area, kithenette, and very nice stone bathroom. Very nice and helpful host, very nice yard with seating. The neighborhood is very nice and quiet and convenient, as you're in the cool E Portland neighborhoods in a few minutes of driving and there's a bus straight to downtown about 1 block away! If we return we would stay here again!

Quaintly Delightful!
Auntie's Hideaway was a wonderful part of our wonderful visit in Portland. Surrounded by gardens, it is quiet and peaceful. Inside, every traveler's need has been anticipated -- you don't often have a library of good books available for down times. The bed was very comfortable -- even the bed pillows met our high standard for comfort! We loved the cool night air every evening and slept like babies! The shower does deserve its own round of applause -- like something from a Scandanavian country. In addition to going many places with family members we were visiting, we also hopped on the bus several times and were thankful for the convenience of nearby bus stops. We went by bus to eat Chinese food at Thien Hong and also to tour the amazing Grotto, both just minutes away on Sandy Blvd. We plan to visit Portland every summer, and our visits will be headquartered at Auntie's Hideaway! Looking forward to more stimulating conversations with gracious Jean!

Thank you for your review Mary, and we are glad you got affordable accommodations with us in Auntie's Hideaway during your Portland vacation. That said, we must point out that with a more affordable price comes fewer amenities--in this case, a galley kitchen that we state clearly in our ad as being suitable for storing snacks or light cooking. More, we point out that guests who want a full kitchen might want to book our backyard cabin, Grandpa's. It does, of course, run more per night--often a reason budget-minded folks chose the more affordable Auntie's.

Great comfy, cozy suite with private entrance.
In Portland to visit my son in SE. This property is located off Sandy Blvd and is ideally situated for easy access to the airport, SE and NE and maybe many more. It's on a quiet street with plenty of parking and just a few blocks from a great doughnut shop (!) as well as many Pho restaurants. Jean is a great host, helpful but never intrusive. There is a whole bookshelf full of books and the shower description is not an exaggeration. It's definitely a five star shower. The decor took me back to my own aunt and mom's houses; a lovely use of items that in this era many people toss. That said the bed is definitely of this time and shockingly hard to leave, found myself sleeping way past my usual time. Though it wasn't quite outdoor weather there is a lovely garden that I glimpsed. I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.
