In 1924, one of the reels of film got stuck in the projector and caught fire, igniting a full reel in the lower magazine. Only the outer shell of the theater survived the fire. The Kinema was rebuilt "as near fireproof as possible" and reopened in 1924. The Kinema Theatre was renamed the Hub Theatre in 1928.
