An escapade, not an establishment
If you want an experience and not a hotel, this is a good place to consider. Don’t complain if you wanted a Marriott; it’s not the Marriott. The hostess and host are kind and genuine. The lodging is nestled in a neighborhood, but it feels almost like a jungle. The shower is outside and is reasonably private. Don’t mind the geckos lingering nearby as you enjoy fresh fruit for breakfast.

If you like hotels with all the amenities, this might not be the place for you. This is an amazing bed-and-breakfast! The house is surrounded by tropical plants and wildlife. All night you will be serenaded by frogs and birds. Our room had an outdoor shower and bath that were private and secluded. Every morning we had coffee and a wonderful fruit bowl. We were also offered eggs and toast. Our hosts, Raven And Mark, were very friendly and knowledgeable about the area. They had great recommendations on local beaches, local restaurants, and good places to visit all over the big island. I will definitely be staying here again!

The nights here for the last 2 days were beautiful and magic It was wonderful that you were able to come upstairs and share the time and space out on the lanai looking at the stars And listening to the sounds of the ocean and the creatures that inhabit the night. You were the perfect guess that noticed everything and enjoyed everything everything and realize that this place place is Frozen in time With both the new lava Flow and the interesting tropical forest that merges with black sand, lava,A red violet ocean whose waves break with a turquoise colorThank you for sharing your 10th anniversary with us. What isn’t unique about this place? It’s an intimate b&b, we stayed in the larger room which has three full size beds with nets and a kitchenette. The bathtub and shower are outside - fenced from prying eyes but fun. The decor is Bohemian Eclectic and I spent quite a bit of time in the living room of the main house jamming with host Mark - he just got a stand up bass to go with the piano and ukes I remember from last time (did I mention we came back). Excellent breakfast on the deck looking at the ocean, geckos peeping at us. It’s not for people who absolutely need AC or who can’t handle the chorus of frogs doing their frog song at night. It’s way out there, geographically and figuratively. But we love it.

The Ma'ukele Lodge is a very unique place. The grounds and beach are gorgeous. The lava flow is right between the house and the ocean, and walking to the beach was an amazing and beautiful experience. The breakfast was great and so was sharing it with the geckos.

This is a B&B, Raven & Mark’s home (not a hotel). We loved the location in Pahoa which was impacted by the lava flow in May 2018. Raven makes the best breakfast to get your day started. Mark has all these great stories, and tells you where to visit and what trails to do at the Hawaii Volcano State Park. The backyard of their home is just breathtaking, and you’ll never see this anywhere else!! We stayed in the Hawaiian Suite which had 3 big beds, a microwave and a mini-refrigerator stocked with drinks, fruit and chocolates. There was an outdoor shower (wonderful to use) or tub, and a backyard to take in the island feel. We are in Kona now and it’s so touristy, crowded with people and cars. Wish we could be at Raven & Mark’s oasis.

Uniquely quirky lodge with authentic Hawaiian flair. In the Hawaiian suite, you’re showering outdoors under a canopy of tropical plants in a lush garden, enveloped by the chirping of hundreds of coqui frogs and the distant rumbling of waves crashing onto the rugged lava coast. The hosts are incredibly knowledgeable and helpful and prepare an amazing breakfast that you can eat on the terrace with ocean view. Definitely not the typical hotel experience but so much more memorable.

This property and it’s caregivers, Ravin and Mark are all a hidden gem in this area. I would take this beautiful, detailed property any day over corporate owned resorts, if you want the true Hawaiian experience I recommend visiting Ma’ukele Lodge in Kalapana. If you are lucky enough to catch Mark on a nom work day ask him for a tour of the area, he is very knowledgeable and will share secrets of this magical place.

Raven and Mark are both super wonderful people full of aloha and care. Location was perfect for us to do all of the things we wanted to do on the eastside of the island and the weather was amazing! This was our first time on the Big Island and, prior to staying at Ma'Ukele Lodge, we stayed in a new condo at Waikoloa Beach. That condo was a modern, anonymous, soulless place that could have been anywhere; fine, but we wanted to experience "real Hawaii"! Ma'Ukele Lodge gave us exactly that - amazing hosts who went out of their way to ensure we were comfortable and made the most out of our vacation, to the incredible breakfasts on the lanai while watching the surf crash on the beach, to being located in the heart of the Puna coastline, where you can easily explore less tourist-filled locations! Raven and Mark need a special mention, as they are absolutely lovely. Raven is a New Yorker who moved out 15 years ago, and made us feel so welcome in her home. She contacted us beforehand to allay any fears we might have had around the volcanic eruptions (that are miles away), cooked us amazing breakfasts of fresh fruit, French toast, pancakes and more, and kept our room clean and tidy throughout, always leaving us little treats when we got back from a day on the road. Mark is local and part-Hawaiian, and a treasure trove of information! He would greet us with a hand-drawn map of his recommended itinerary for us, based on our interests, and every one of those created some magical memories that we'll treasure forever. The room was awesome with three four-poster beds, the outdoor shower incredible, and we will definitely be back! No more mega-resorts for us!

A wonderful place surrounded by the jungle and pahoehoe near the sea. Raven and Marck the owners are very nice and clever people. We had very nice talks with them about Hawaii. Pahoa is about five minutes from the lodge. There are good restaurants and nice local handicrafts. The place is very quiet because no much people are visiting them because of the volcano. The place is very safe! Is a must!

Lovely B&B on the South End of the Island
The B&B was very charming and the breakfasts were a great way to start the day. The coqui frogs in the areas can be quite loud at night and the hosts thoughtfully provide earplugs in case they bother you. A short path in the yard brings you to a wide lava flow (inactive). The Hawaiian Suite is excellent if you have kids - it's detached from the house so you're less likely to disturb the other guests if your kids are early risers and the 3 beds were perfect for the 4 of us. Breakfast with the geckos was a hit with both adults and kids and Mark was a great source of local information. The shower is outside, which was great for us, but good to know if that fazes you.

Hawaiian Style
Great location right on the lava by the ocean. Raven and Mark are amazing. We learned so much about the area from them. The breakfast was delicious with fresh fruit and an egg dish. Note that the suite only has an outdoor shower which was very fun to use. The suite also has a small refrigerator, a microwave, and coffee and tea maker. It's an "artsy" type of a place for fun loving island style people.

Paradise in Hawaii
Raven, the innkeeper, works hard to ensure a sublime experience for her guests. Her home is beautiful, full of color and artistic flourishes. Her artistic bent is evident at breakfast when she serves a fruit plate as lovely as it is delicious. She provides instructions to the nearby beaches and tidal pools. The inn offers use of snorkeling gear. In the evening, the night sky is full of stars. From the rocky lava shore, the lava flow from Volcano National Park is visible. There is so much to do. We spent one afternoon at the tidal pools. The black beach just three miles away is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. Our bed was very comfortable. Our room was supplied with juice, water, and an array of snacks. I would highly recommend this B&B. Indeed, when I return to the island, I will stay at this location.

An Amazing B&B Near the Lava Flows
This is an amazing place with amazing hosts. Raven and Mark are incredibly friendly and hospitable - and a wealth of knowledge about the area. We are 2 adults and 1 10 year old, and we stayed for 3 nights. Our room was large, decorated in a style that I can only call funky - two large 4 poster beds and a futon. Luxurious bed linens. Lovely rugs on the floor, and a ceiling fan to keep you cool at night. I've never stayed in such a well stocked B&B - the mini fridge had fruit and water in it, which was replenished on a daily basis. There was an in room coffee service, and a variety of necessities in the toilet room. I mentioned that I liked chocolate, and that evening Raven left me a lovely bar of the most delicious chocolate - how thoughtful is that? We loved the outdoor shower and bath - bliss! Breakfast was fresh cooked by Raven - we had pancakes, and eggs 1 morning. The papaya boat with fresh fruit was equally amazing. The breakfast table is on a balcony overlooking their garden, with a view of the sea beyond - so relaxing. Raven left papaya shells on the balcony railing and the geckos came running - they were tame and would go on your hand if you let them. They are right near the access to the lava flow. Note that if you are there on a Wednesday the market, which is a short walk away, is great fun - you shop and there is street food, a bar and a live band. Thank you, Raven and Mark, for a truly enjoyable holiday - it was the icing on our Hawaiian vacation.

Lovely lodge near lava view!
Coming from a small city, the stay was a close-to-nature experience for us. The black sand beach is just seconds away. The dried lava too - exciting! mini natural garden is beautiful experience - everything is just organic! The sound of sea waves and frog/insects while in the comfort of soft and clean bed. We didn't try the outdoor shower since it was raining but the toilet attached to our room is perfectly new. We love the cleanliness even though so close to nature. Our hosts - Raven and Mark were great - we even called them back to check for the way to view lava after we checked out and they were as helpful as ever. Lovely people - we still miss our morning chats. While we couldn't help having rain during our stay but we believe it is good for the land. So we couldn't do as much as we wanted there except driving around so our stay in Hilo it was mostly our hosts and the accomodation who made our days unforgettable. :-)

Superb Ocean Side cottage close to Lava flow
A fine gem situated at the eastern edge of the Volcanoes National Park. Provides best access to hike to lava flow 61g. Owners Mark and Raven were delightful hosts. Excellent breakfast and coffee prepared daily- fresh fruit, eggs, omelette, tortilla, outstanding coffee. Mark knows this part of Big island like the back of his hand, provided excellent ideas guide on how to explore the area. Raven took care of breakfast and helped me with my laundry after being soaked in a night hike. The house is decorated with a wonderful tasteful touch- lots of Polynesian, Asian and African artifacts. The property borders onto a small lava field and a black sand beach. It's wonderful to hear the waves at night and see the sky and horizon in the morning.

The hosts were absolutely great. Raven made the most delicious breakfasts every day, of strong coffee, and a fruit bowl followed by an egg dish. Loved it!
We were welcomed by Raven and she was a most gracious host! She gave us a tour of her home and made us feel very welcome. Mark took us down to the beach and a bit of history about how the lava flow and weather conditions that have impacted the area, it's a gorgeous view! There is a large deck off the living room with a nice view, we ate breakfast there and it is an awesome way to start the day. Raven made us delicious fruit bowls to start breakfast with and then we served the papaya peels to the geckos on the deck, it was fun to watch them gather and eat. After the fruit we were served a substantial breakfast which fueled our daily adventures. Mark made us a handwritten map of the local area and we enjoyed finding these spots that were not overly crowded with travelers. This side of the island is much more mellow, and way less tourists which we like. It's close to Volcano National Park, and the coast is full of amazing scenery. Staying here was the highlight of our trip - we loved staying with Raven!

A little paradise, with wonderful hosts
What a wonderful place! The location is perfect, you can see the ocean from the terrace through the tropical gardens and the wonderful black sand Kehena beach is a 5 min drive. There is a bar and a few places to eat within a walking distance, very laid back, it's alike a local centre for everything and the people there are great...Raven and Mark are both perfect hosts, they treat you just like their friends staying with them and nothing is much trouble. Mark took us for a walk across the lava field just outside the house on the first night, he loves the island and told us lots of interesting things about the nature, people, local life etc, it was a great experience. Raven and Mark will suggest places to go to and can organise lots of activities. My partner and I really enjoyed our stay - the room was very comfortable, a great bed, the breakfast served on the terrace is lovely, there are lots of little luxuries they provide like free chocolates and fruits in your room. Can't really fault it, it was one of the best stays in my life and I've been to over 50 countries!

A unique stay!
Raven and Mark are very hospitable hosts! Raven cooked a wonderful breakfast every morning on the lanai... the resident Madagascar geckos were very cute and entertaining little morning guests. Mark would provided helpful tips to finding the best local hot spots and was a real pleasure to talk to about life on the Big Island. We choose to stay in the big room (one large room with 3 beds and a private outdoor shower!). This is not your typical-hotel-like-setup, this is their private home that offers a one-of-a-kind stay. If you're looking for a different kind of b&b experience I would recommend Ma'ukele Lodge. As a note for some people, there is no AC in the room, however there are plenty of screened doors and windows to accommodate a comfortable breeze. Mosquitos were occasionally a problem, but repellent is provided. The tree frogs can be very noisy at night, but ear plugs toned the volume down quite a bit.

Experience going to sleep with the sound of nature coming in thru the open windows, the breeze of the fan chilling you in the night air and waking up to a walk along a lava flow that leads out to a secluded, rocky ocean wonderland to watch the sunrise. Arrive back at the house and soon coffee, fresh fruit and any variety of home made breakfast food will be served. And if you're really lucky the owners will have time to sit and "talk story" with you. Thank you for the wonderful experience!!
