We checked in and went to the room, but unlike the Expedia photo, the room was dark and dingy, and had a bad smell. The carpet looked like it had never been steam cleaned. I had a shower even though the water was barely tepid, and the bathmat was still spongy wet from the previous occupants. The towels were worn and thin. The room was boiling hot even though the AC was on. At midnight it was ~16°C outside but it was closer to 30°C in the room with the AC set at the coolest settings. We left the door open for a while to air out the room but there were some shady looking characters milling about so we didn’t feel safe with the door open for very long. A lot of room doors were open, and it looked like this is a long-term home for people on Social Assistance. We finally fell asleep(covered in sweat) until just after 3:00 a.m., when a loud screaming match broke out on the balcony outside of the room next to us. I peaked out the window, and there were 3 or 4 guys arguing and screaming at people inside the room. 25 minutes later, when I was contemplating calling the police, the argument broke up and those guys finally left. The next morning, the owner played dumb about the overnight ruckus. He never offered to move us to a room that had a properly working AC unit. This place is a dirty, seedy, flea bag motel. We didn’t feel safe. We couldn’t stay another night in this dump and checked out a day early to go somewhere clean and safe. I have never encountered a place as bad as this.
