The first 3 were ok. The 4th night was the night from hell. The host and at least one other person (partner?) were having screaming arguments - we were woken up at least 3 times during the night. We were hoping to make an early breakfast (7:00 a.m. ish) on the morning of our departure, but the screaming arguments continued so we left as quickly as possible. The location was outstanding for our needs near Central Park, and near the subway to get to our Broadway show. The service was very friendly and responsive to our needs. My husband chose this because it said “boutique guest house.” It is the most minimal of hostels. It is for traveling students. It is not for anyone looking for any semblance of comfort. However on the day of our arrival we received a message that their “ normal checking times are between 3 and 5 PM” but that we could “choose to check in after that for a small fee of $25.” They also offered to give us the WiFi password but they would not tell it to us and wanted to personally enter it on our phones. Even after doing that, the WiFi passwords were not correct and they refused to tell us what it was. That interaction was bizarre. There was a small ac unit which worked, but it was on the floor, and was rather loud and took up space. The bathroom was dirty: the toilet needed cleaning, there were dark colored stains on the walls near the toilet, the tiles needed scrubbing, and the toilet paper dispenser was held on the wall with some goo and that was falling off. The bathroom was the worst part of it all. If you’re comfortable with low cleanliness, this is fine. It was safe and the people were nice (WiFi debacle excluded). There was junk, tools, and chemicals strewn through out the hallway and the door on my room didn’t have a proper lock. I read the mixed reviews and chose Macaw Guesthouse anyway - I am glad that I did. It was a reasonable option in expensive New York City and it was as described. Charming hosts who went out of their way to welcome me and ensure that I was comfortable. Short walk to transportation options and dining options nearby.
