its a HOSTEL not a hotel...
not as Expedia states a hotel and hostel. there is nothing there that gets even close to a HOTEL, the door sign also reads HOSTEL not hotel, so yeah other than that it was OK

best deal in New York
This hostel is much better than many around the world because NYC has very strict laws - only allows 2 people in a room so you will not be sleeping with 12-14 other people, etc. Chocolat Hostel won Top Hostel in NYC category for 2007, 2008, and 2009. My friend cancelled her trip because of some of the negative reviews on here. If you are looking for a hotel, don't expect to pay the rock bottom rate!

You get what you payed for
It is a cheap hotel, however clean. Room was very small like a store room. You get what you paid for. If you are looking for budget trip, this hotel is good choice because of its location and price.

Great neighborhood, but unlivable hotel
I had only been planning to stay in Manhattan for a few days, so I thought that I could suck it up for a few days and save some serious dollars by staying in this hostel. Couldn't be more wrong. There was noise from either people or the creaking of the building at literally every hour of the night. I wasn't able to get a wink of sleep either of the two nights I was there. The hotel staff were rude and extremely unaccomodating with most requests. Describing these rooms as spartan would be generous. It's pretty convenient that they don't show you the rooms, because I can't imagine anyone staying here otherwise. The living accommodations best resemble a prison cell, with no exaggeration on my part. Scuffed walls, no furniture, no view, in an extremely. crowded space Understandably, the people who stay here are also unsavory types: typically Eastern european tourists. I was walking out of the building one morning to find a delightful present left by (presumably) one of the other guests: a trail of vomit dripping down the staircase. Do yourself a favor and stay somewhere else.

livable
When we first got there we were expecting a little more than what we actually received. The bed was itchy and the room was clean, but you could hear everything happening around the floor. The carpet was also very itchy and I think that bugs might be in the carpet too. Overall, it was an itchy experience, but the staff was nice and they did keep everything clean.

not bad, beyond perfect for the price
I have only two points of contention. 1. Before you check in, the hostel requires a printout of your ticket *out* of New York. Why should one be required to be leaving the city at the end of their stay at this place? That, to me, is ludicrous. What if I have reservations the next night at another hotel in the city? What if I live in Brooklyn and just want to spend a night or weekend in Upper Manhattan? 2. there could have been some sort of chair in the room. If you are in a shared room, there is nowhere, really, to sit. Otherwise it was great. People were friendly, and it's located near a lot of cool places, and a short bus, subway or taxi from a lot more. Quiet block in a bustling neighborhood. Just lose the stupid 'return ticket' garbage.

Good Deal, Nice People
I arrived way before check-in and Linda allowed me into my room early. Everyone was really nice. The location was great. Inexpensive but nice restaurants near-by. Granted, the amenities are minimal, but if all you need is a place to drop your stuff and sleep, this place is great.

Cheap, good location, clean...but, small, quiet old, no private bathroom (in my case,I'm not sure if other rooms have a private one) so, just for sleep and enjoy New York!!! good choice for save money and not have problems!!!
