This is a tricky review to give: on the last of my four nights at Arlo NoMad the fire alarms went off at least five times throughout the night. The first was around 1.30am, then a while later, then again, etc. It transpires that the hotel staff couldn't call on anyone to fix a broken smoke detector. I understand that finding staff in general has been hell in NYC since Covid. So I'll cut them some slack, especially as the hotel deducted my resort fees for the inconvenience.
Otherwise, the hotel is a fun place to be, with friendly staff. It's clean, modern and well maintained. The rooms are just a little larger than the bed, so they suit one person better than two.
There are some easy quick-wins that the hotel would benefit from: the breakfast staff had zero training, so it was painful ordering and then being asked again a few minutes later. Then getting some bread but no knife, then a knife but no butter. The kitchen was also achingly slow.
The room cleaning team uses noisy plastic bags either to take the linen away or bring fresh. The rustling in the corridor goes on interminably, making it hard to sleep in the day. Cloth bags would solve that instantly.
And the bodega/shop in the lobby sometimes had food – but quite often didn't. For no explicable reason. That was a pain in the neck.
Overall, a good visit that could easily have been excellent. The great location is the winner.
