This is one of the most amazing hotels I have ever been to (and that is counting numerous hotels on three continents). You feel like you are back in time spending the night in some ancient monastery or stately mansion, but with all the modern amenities expected in a good hotel. Each room has a patron saint. So you have a San Miguel room, a San Pablo room, etc. with beautiful paintings on the walls to admire. The beds are very comfortable, no problems with hot water (like in some other Mexican hotels), clean and nice shower, well functioning TV (which is also a problem in some other Mexican hotels), very helpful and friendly staff, good restaurant with good food and good service. But again, the ambiance is amazing. In historical Patzcuaro, you can actually imagine yourself being in 16th or 17th century Mexico or Spain when you spend the night here. I was happy to see this hotel is not ashamed of the Christian heritage of Mexico and whoever designed the interior of this hotel should get an award for having an amazing talent of producing a feast for the eyes. It is a short walk away from all the must places to see in town. The best place to stay in Patzcuaro by far (and we have been in two other hotels in Patzcuaro which were highly ranked on Expedia and were pretty good, but not nearly as wonderful as Casa del Refugio).
