Castanea delle Furie is located on the San Rizzo hills, about 300 meters above sea level and only 5 km from the city of Messina. From here, you can enjoy extraordinary views of the Strait of Messina, with roads connecting to nearby villages and the Tyrrhenian coast. The landscape features gentle valleys often stretching to the sea, with the ocean as a dominant visual element. This hillside location, healthy air, tranquility, and local hospitality made the area a renowned holiday destination for important Messina aristocratic families, as shown by the many historic villas. Although historical sources about the village are limited, its foundation probably dates back to the origins of Messina. In the Middle Ages, Castanea delle Furie was one of the most important districts of the city, with a complex urban fabric enriched by buildings and works of art from the Middle Ages to the early twentieth century. You can visit all year round, but to fully experience the colors, flavors, and traditions, it is recommended to plan your visit during one of the village’s annual festivals.
