The port city of Mangalia has an interesting past dating back to the Neolithic period. Later, Greeks, Romans and Turks claimed this region. The region is among the hottest in Romania, with mild winters and scorching summers. A strong sea breeze refreshes sunbathers year-round.
The town overlooks the Black Sea on the eastern coast of the county of Constanta. It is between the resorts of Vama Veche to the south and Costinesti to the north. The nearest major transportation hub is the Mihail Kogălniceanu International Airport, 50 miles (80 kilometres) north of the commune. Ride a minibus from the city of Constanta in less than 1 hour.
