It feels a little harsh to not be writing a great review, as compared to the Neon monstrosities which seem to be the only other options in Mandalay, it really wasn't all that bad.
The Good - the rooms are clean and a decent size, it's a hop skip and a jump from most of the tourist attractions (palace, hill, pagoda etc), or if you just continue up the same street you can get away from the tourists and see a little of the real Mandalay. Some of the staff try to be very helpful, and there is a warm welcome.
The Bad - it's right next to another restaurant which seemed to have horrendous Karaoke nights so loud that you may as well give in and join them, the breakfast is pretty weak, the restaurant is decent but weirdly it's and Indian rather than local cuisine, and they completely overcharge for wine (e.g. the Rose D'Inle was about USD10 at the shops in town, USD 22 at other hotels, and USD 40 here). Some of the staff aren't anywhere near as helpful as others, and will try to rip you off for taxis, or take advantage of the dual currency system (3 taxis to and from the airport cost USD 10-12, for the last they tried to charge USD 20, but quickly backed down). The outdoor showers seem like a nice idea until you realise they are absolutely riddled with mosquitoes! Shame!
All told, I don't know that you could find a much better place in Mandalay, but with a little bit of effort they could really make this somewhere a lot more special.
