Central location
Basic room overlooking Sol square. Ideal location but the noise from the square was noticeable especially on Friday and Saturday night. The staff were helpful but breakfast was very basic. Room was clean. Not very gay !!

Various delights on the door steps
we used to rent a car during our yearly tour of Europe. So, it's rather essential to get a hotel further away from the city center for parking reason. We were glad not to rent a car this year and get the hotel right in the heart of Madrid, and Gay Hostal Puerta del sol served us perfectly in this aspect. It was a very splendid vacation for us.

The location was excellent. It was in the center of Madrid and very easy to get to all of the exighting sights and close to lovely resturants and bars. The two gentleman who ran the hotel were very helpful very kind and made me feel welcome however the lady that helped run the hotel was extremely unkind very cold and made me feel so uncomfortable to even leave my room. The service at the breakfast area was for me the worst part of my stay. The food was just toast and cheese and cornflakes this is something I an do at home and the stuff who ran the breakfast area were very very rude. I was yelled at just because accidently I walked into the kitchen rather then the siiting area. I was spoken to with such disrespect and i felt so uncomfortable to eat there. All I had was bread and left I decided not to eat there again and I found lovely cafes on the srreet instead. I may have had bad expiriances with some of the stuff but the two men who ran the place were very nice very kind and welcomimg. The room was very clean although had alot of dents and cracks on the ceiling the walls and bathroom but it was still clean the bed was nice but needed another blanket. The air-conditioner worked excellenty and was very comfortable. The balcony was very small but ok to stand for abit. Would I stay here again? Taking all the good and bad of this place my answer would be No I felt alittle cheated in the place and so will not be staying there again.

I will be back!
Really enjoyed the amazing location this hostel. The old saying of you get what you pay for did apply here. The bed was really just a futon on a plywood. VERY little space to move around in the bathroom. Was I impressed? Not really. Will I stay here again? Heck yeah I will! I was able to enjoy the city as I was right there in the middle of everything!

fantastic location
very simple hostal. gay friendly at best. everyone stayed there except children. breakfast was very basic yet hit the spot to have something to eat in the morning. staff was very helpful. mixture of guest of every language, size, shape and color. metro and renfe at your doorstep. easy access to everything.i mean everything.

Friendly, no stairs, very well located. Clean, quiet. Air conditioning. Fair breakfast included, same 7 days. Cafee available in breakfast room all day. Free and fast wireless in room. Outside restroom but near, clean. Warm water. Had to hold shower head in my hand - not easy for my bad legs. Horrible bed, very small but adequate room. They gave me two more pillows as asked They brought an armchair as I asked. In all, very happy with my choice.

Good location and inexpensive, but noisy.
My single room was basic, comfortable and clean - and very inexpensive. The shared bathrooms were adequate. The location was very convenient: the hotel located in the centre of Madrid. Unfortunately, on two of the four nights that I stayed, I was frequently awoken by the noise made by other guests. Whilst the hotel management is not responsible for who stays at the hotel, the inexpensive cost of the rooms did seem to attract a younger clientele who came back very late and very noisily. A combination of thin walls; no damp absorbing surfaces (e.g. carpets) and some guests' propensities for slamming doors closed rather than turning the door handle; for talking very loudly early in the morning with their doors open, and for listening to television very loudly; resulted in a far from peaceful environment for sleeping!

This was a return trip to Madrid and this Hostel. Enjoy the location as rooms with a view look down into Puerto Del Sol and the Metro interchange. Good shopping two blocks over and excellent restaurants.Don't get location confused as Vodophone has bought naming rights to this metro line an station.

The Hostel is okay and the location is excellent.
It was difficult to put television on for two days so I report it. Staff checked three times before I managed to watch something the third day but yet still some channels weren't clear. Also bathroom floor get very wet after each bath.

Basic yet clean and secure. Great location.
I had such a good experience at this hotel, a very pleasant stay. It is very basic; the rooms are small, the breakfast quite meagre and my view was of washing in a courtyard. However it is a bargain, especially when you consider the location. It is very clean and surprisingly quiet. Plus the staff are most helpful, yet not obtrusive at all. If you want to enjoy Madrid and simply want somewhere clean and secure to lay your head at night (or in the wee hours of the morning) This hotel would be your perfect choice.

No frills but clean, great location
It's a hostel, so don't expect luxury, but the location is perfect, everything is clean and quiet. The only problem I had was that the wifi didn't work consistently (there is, however, a computer for guests' use).

Misleading and Unbearably noisy
There are too many problems with this place and some are not the fault of the establishment. Puerta del Sol is an extremely busy and loud plaza and if you are unfortunate enough to have your window facing it, sleep will be very difficult. that being said, the walls are painfully thin, the room keys are left on a board for anyone to grab and there is rarely a staff member behind the desk. there were no towels in my room and i thought this was what happened in a hostel until the next day when there were towels. The main issue is that the hostel has the word "Gay" in its title online, but not when you arrive. There is nothing that would mark this as a gay establishment at all. There are no brochures or maps to indicate where to go and it isn't even located in the gay area, where there are many other hotels and hostels. Gay or straight, I would not recommend this hostel at all.

I had a wonderful stay of three nights at the Hostal Puerta del Sol. Perfect location right in the heart of Madrid and just about a minute walk from the metro stop. My room had a balcony and a great view of the plaza Puerta del Sol. The room was small but the bed was very comfortable--I especially liked the comforter as it's much more comfortable than blankets and sheets I used in other much fancier hotels. The staff were very friendly: the two ladies and the gentleman--I'm sorry I don't remember their names any more but they are all very nice and helpful. The tea and coffee available (24 hours I guess?) in the common area was very much appreciated since I drink tea all the time. Breakfast was simple but good. The hotel was very clean and had excellent wifi. The only thing is that the shower might be too small for bigger people. Overall great value for the price. Would definitely stay here again.

A great time
I was very pleased with the hostal. The location was excellent so easy to get around the city from the hostal area. Everyone was very pleasant and most helpful while I was there. Typical breakfast, toast and cheese and ham. I loved the massive amounts of good strong Spanish coffee and hot milk. Overall a nice stay and I would recommend it to others.

Nice Enough Place, Not Gay Though.
The hostel is advertised as being a gay hostel, but for the most part it isn't. At most this is a gay friendly hostel as the guests were more of a mixed crowd. Don't try and locate the hostel by its rainbow flag - it's not there (and I expect that it was only there when the photos were being taken to entice the gay traveller).

There's nothing "gay" about the hotel despite the word in the alternative name. It's actually just the Puerta del Sol Hostal so don't go looking around thinking there is a different hostal by a different name. The location is PERFECT and that's pretty much why you would want to stay there.

A hidden gem.
I found the staff at The Puerta del Sol to be a friendly and welcoming. The Hostal is perfectly located within a few metres of Sol Subway station, and is within walking distance of all of Madrid's tourist, nightlife and shopping highlights. I met visitors who had returned to the hostal over and over again, and I can really understand why. I would highly recommend the hostal for single travelers as well as groups.It felt extremely safe, and the level of cleanliness was incredible. I just hope you enjoy your stay as much as I did.

Puerta del Sol- Caters to Both Gay & Non-Gay
You will find Puetra del Sol Hostel and Gay Hostel Puerta del Sol is the same hostel, they want to show they cater to the Gay community. But they are not in the Gay area, which is on the other side of Gran Via. The hostel is on the Plaza Puerta del Sol within meters of the Sol Metro station. You are located in the heart of the Madrid. While the center was always busy, and could be loud at times, I found the double pane windows and black out shutters to block most noise, other the sirens from police cars I think you would hear from most any room you stay in Madrid. The breakfast they offer is basic- coffee, OJ, tea, corn flakes, white bread, ham and cheese. They served coffee, tea and coco 24/7. While the internet can be slow or busy at times, there are several different connections, and they all share the same password, so just find a connection with a stronger signal. The rooms are basic and bigger than others, bathroom is plain not fancy, shower is small, with shower curtain. I found the staff friendly and willing to help. Daily housekeeping was provided. For the week-end, the room rates were reasonable, especially when others were charging 2x more and would drop them on week-day. The hostel offers basic accommodation and is prime location, if you want some more elegant or fancy be ready to pay 2x to 3x the price especially on the week-ends.

Love the location location location. It is the Times Square of Madrid and the price is right. The little inconvience of not having your own bathroom was no problem. The staff was helpful, breakfast basic, but fine, nice spacious room, comfortable common area, and what a joy to just look out your balcony at all hustle bustle below. I really enjoyed this place and would stay there again.

Budget accommodations in la Puerta del Sol
I have stayed there twice. They are helpful, and the breakfast is neatly and cleanly laid out. The location is in the thick of things, in the center of Madrid activity.

The hostel was very welcoming, room was great, we had a room overlooking Sol Square it had a balcony and despite it being really busy wasn't noisy at all. Breakfast wasnt marvellous but overall we would recommend the hostel and look forward to going back soon.

This hotel is the best location to be in Madrid, you can walk to everyplace. The staff are very friendly and helpful, and there is breakast included. The rooms are very basic but clean, and the french doors to a balcony overlooking Sol with lounge chairs was a real bonus. I would definitely stay there again.

Not quite as gay as they make out but not a problem. Would be good if they had a secure left luggage place/room to leave your bags for a few after check out. Did not feel comfortable leaving mine in the reception area, only needs the staff distracted for a second...

The hotel is located in the fourth floor in a commercial building near Plaza Del Sol. The rooms are dated, tv is 13 inches and the bathroom is so small that only one person fits at a time. The bathroom was added to the room and its the size of a closet. The shower is so small that you will feel uncomfortable.

The hotel was fine from the point of a regular Internet viewer. As soon as I had arrived, the staff was rude, the room was dark and noisy and my overall experience was very bad. Also, the owner's remarks on the Tripadvisor.com site that providing a bad service and being rude to his own guests is a vice of "cheap" hotels and that if we don't like it, we might, as well, go to an upscale hotel, is just preposterous. Insted of improving the quality of his establishment, he argues with ex-guests? Avoid at all costs. Or pay for ONE NIGHT ONLY, walk around the Puerta del Sol neighborhood and You will find a ton of other hotels/hostels.

This location was superb! It was right in Plaza del Sol making all the sites extremely convenient. Our room faced the plaza, which stays very active all hours of the night, so if you sleep light, you may have trouble. The rooms were clean, but dated and dingy. It wouldn't be a room you want to spend a lot of time in. If you plan on just sleeping and showering, then this is your spot. Note the breakfast is white bread, slices of ham and slices of cheese, cereal and toast - so it's very simple! The staff was very friendly and helpful. This hotel defines hostal - not as nice as a hotel and not as dingy as most hostels.

This hotel is located in the center of everything. I lucked out and got a bathroom in my guestroom. Some guests have to share a bathroom. It's not the Ritz, but it's clean, convenient and comfortable enough to meet your basic needs.

Great Deal if you are on a low budget
Great location, great value, clean, quiet, my spacious room was a bit like going to summer camp...the price was right and there was good coffee in the morning with an adequate breakfast...for the best price in town. I shared a bathroom with someone I was told..but never saw them. Breakfast time included a fascinating group of people/ gay/ straight/ from all over the world filled with ideas about what to see in Madrid.

Great Location, Friendly Staff, Very Basic Room. Would Stay Again.
I'll admit, as a straight male I was slightly put off by the title "Gay Hostal Puerta del Sol" but I got over it and I'm glad I did. The staff were nice and very helpful. The hotel is right near the center of the Plaza/City and in conveniently located next to numerous clubs/bar restaurants and tourist attractions. It is also about 100 ft from the metro station, bus stop and taxi area. There is also a direct Airport shuttle about a 5-10 minute walk away and it only costs 2 euro each way! The Hostal is located on the 4th floor of the building, but there is an elevator so it's not an issue and probably makes it a bit quieter than the ground floor establishments are. The building entrance locks at night (you are provided a key) and the Hostal itself is almost always locked and you must be "buzzed" in, so security is not an issue. The rooms are not attractive in any sense and the beds are nothing special, but in my opinion hotel rooms are for sleeping only and you should spend as much time as possible out and about anyway. There is a sink and a tiny TV (I just watched TV/movies on my laptop, which has a larger screen...) as well as a place to hang your clothes. The internet was slow at times, but can be accessed from your room. Bathrooms are shared but in the 7 nights I stayed there I never had a problem waiting for anyone as there are multiple bathrooms. This is my first hostal as I prefer hotels, but if you're going to stay in a hostal it might as well be this one.
