Overall, the hotel offers a high standard of accommodation - good, large, clean and comfortable rooms, and good quality lounge areas. One problem with the lounge areas is that they are almost impossible to use after dark, as the lights are on a 5 minute timer, so by the time you have settled onto a couch and opened your book - the lights go out!! Also the room lights are quite dim - in fact they need replacing - so again reading became something of an issue.
The other real problem that I had was with the quality, and the price, of the meals in the restaurant. The menu is less than extensive and the prices are significantly higher than other restaurants in the area. The food quality is not particularly high either, especially when considering the price levels. The breakfast service was passable, but the scrambled eggs were usually cool and rubbery - and the lack of staff overseeing the buffet meant that the coffee and hot water flasks quite often ran out and they were not refilled for some time.
The hotel is located in a small village on the north coast- the village is still only accessible by the older roads, so expect a lengthy drive, via "interesting" roads to get anywhere. As with all of Madeira, there is a bus service, but you really do need a car to access this hotel. But as a complete change from Funchal, it is to be recommended as it is good to experience the real Madeira away from the crowds.
