I have stayed at the Monte Carlo for over 20 years and they have always looked after my needs with great care and compassion. The hotel is set in a wonderful position in the town ( not the soulless hotel zone) overlooking the sea and mountains. It’s a period hotel, with tremendous charm with a pool on the roof at a certain price point. We visited in April 2024 and the staff were fabulous and the stay in Madeira a joy. The Monte Carlo is a period gem, but not a modern chain hotel. If you want a slice of Madeira stay.. close if steep walk to the whole town, museums and restaurants. 24 hour desk, limited parking ( but parking in the area) simple bu cheep breakfast, comfortable and large period rooms. Like Madeira itself charming, quirky and old school.

Complete disappointment. Website is not repsentative of reality. No air conditioning, no fans, no fridge, no ice machine, no hair dryer, no safe. You need to ask to borrow a dryer. You need to leave your room and car keys with the front desk when you leave. We had to pay 2 euros for a few pieces of ice. They also added a charge of 2 euros for used mismatched plastic cups. Everything was outdated and in weathered condition. The ceiling in our room was patched with paper and masking tape. There is NO swim up bar as per website. The pool had green algae all around. TV was outdated. Wifi was only available in front lobby. Red carpet in main stairs was used and faded. There was supposed to be music from 4pm until midnight. We barely heard anything and the sound system was also outdated. We were supposed to stay for 4 nights but left the next day.

Lovely old hotel. Interior a bit outdated but that also adds to its charm. The only thing that I didn’t like was a breakfast, basic and with unacceptable dirty plates, cups and cutlery. After two days just skipped it and had it in some of nice pastelarias in town.

The building was constructed in 1905 and has gone through a number of transformations. The most recent owners have done a great job of upgrading while maintaining it's charm and character. A few very miner deficiences, but I would not hesitate to return.

The bathroom was so outdated and water leaked onto the floor tiles from somewhere, not badly, but enough to make your feet wet. The view from the window was the roof swimming pool wall with a bit of a view above. Only stayed 2 nights otherwise would have moved. The overal building is old and decor shabby but interesting and the staff very polite and on hand. The terrace was lovely.

Historic 1905 Hotel with cozy rooms , captivating
I really enjoyed the 1905 beautiful MONTE CARLO HOTEL building, it has breathtaking, captivating view of the city. Pool on the roof. One could sit on the roof all day & enjoy captivating 180° view of the city, the bay, ocean, mountains. Pedro & Albino were very well mannered, cordial, helpful, kind people. My room was nice size, with spacious bathroom, it had a shower & a bath. It's 5 minutes walk to city center, the beach, old town, airport bus stop. Architecture around, walking towards hotel, or from, was also captivating, many beautiful, historical buildings. It also has a big space at the front entrance to the hotel, were one could sit, relax & enjoy the captivating view. There is a library, a lounge are on the 1st floor, it's really wonderful, relaxing, cozy. Am so glad & grateful to the owner for having me there, I enjoyed the breakfast/ lunch serv d by Albino, he was kind & caring person, cappuccino was delicious, can't wait to return & recommend it to fellow travelers. Thank you Albino & Pedro, Muito Obrigado ❤️🙏

Fine place but odd rules and bad service
Hotel itself is basic and dated but a pleasant walk from the centre and great views. Service was such that I'd never stay again though. Apon arriving around 9.30pm (says 24 hrs online) I entered by pushing a door with a green go sign on it and a staff member angrily asked me how i got in, implying I'd broken in and not just walked in. I explained I'd just opened the door which was recieved with further hostility. Then she said she'd take my passport, put it away and walked me to a room. I asked how long she'd have my passport for and she wouldn't say, but i pressed her on it and she eventually said 10 mins. Then, she left - an hour passes and she still hasn't returned my passport, so i find my way back to reception in another building and get it back from her. I check my booking and find that I've not been put in the room i paid for but a far smaller one with no patio and a cold shower. The next day this is fixed by a more professional member of staff, who tries to take my key off me and i say i'd rather keep it so I don't have to call in to reception in case that woman is there. she agrees. later, woman from first night chases me down the drive to take the key off me "because it's hotel policy". She didn't care that it had been okayed by someone above her, and in the end, i tired of her constant bullying and gave it to her because she wouldn't stop. I never asked why she put me in the wrong room, and she never acknowledged it. Bizarre.

Dear Mr Djemal As per your email we noted that unfortunately you have not enjoyed your recent stay at our Hotel, and we sorry for that. We would like to inform you that you can make check in at the Hotel 24h as mentioned on the website. Regarding passport we would like to inform you that we and all Hotels have to ask ID card or passport for all guests. As already explained at reception we have to fill in the SEF information, therefore we need you full name, ID or passport number, birth date, expire and issue date and nationality. Regarding the room it was given upon arrival a superior room near the pool on the next day we gave an upgrade for a triple sea view room near the pool with balcony with no extra charge. Concerning the Hot water on the room, we would like to inform that all the rooms near the pool area were occupied and all of them had hot water. We did not receive any complain on this matter. In respect of Hotel room keys as explained all our keys are manual therefore we ask all the guests when the go outside the hotel to leave them at the reception (Hotel Policy). Kindest regards HMC

Nice stay.
All the staff were very friendly, welcoming and helpful! Very clean rooms. Looks a lot more modern in the photos than in real life. Amazing veiws from the outside areas. If you need to leave before 8am, you need to let them know as the front door and gate is locked. They tell you how to get out, but I couldnt figure out how to get out of the gate so had to chuck all my stuff over a wall and climb over as had to get to my ferry!

Lovely hotel with stunning views of Funchal. Hotel is situated about 5 to 10 minutes walk from Funchal town centre but be warned it is at the top of a very steep hill although this is great for walking off the fantastic food and drink available from the numerous restaurants and bars in the town.

The view from entrance terrace and pool are unbeatable. The bar is open late and has good priced drinks with service overlooking the city. The pool is small but amazing escape. Basic, no atmosphere.
We stayed for 2 weeks. Upon our arrival we were greeted by a very pleasant young man who explained as much as he could (unfortunately we only saw him twice after during the 2 weeks). The room was basic at best, hand wash and shower gel were like clothes detergent so we didn't use it but we did take our own. The flooring is wood and we noticed a big crack with splinters pointing out of it, how it wasn't noticed before we will never know. As we are a family with children, this is unacceptable. We went to complain to another member of staff who was unenthusiastic, and remained so throughout the time. I explained the problem in Portuguese and he had a blank look on his face. I then explained in English, he had the same look, so assumed he either didn't understand or didn't care. Amazingly, a maid came up who I explained to her and she understood fully then put a mat there. During breakfast times the lady who served us was quite miserable and looked as if she didn't want to work there. When we first arrived, as we had paid for breakfast for a family of 4, 2 baskets were placed on our table. Towards the end of the week, we ended up with 1 basket with enough for 3 people. Each day we also had a plate with cheese and meats, but by the end we were given 3 plates for 4 people. I would like to point out that the unenthusiastic chap didn't explain how the breakfast process worked, are we seated or do we help ourselves? We felt like lemons waiting for someone to turn up. We would say mor

Two weeks in Hotel Monte Carlo
Had a great two weeks in Madeira, staying at Hotel Monte Carlo. Hotel was ok - not modern - a former private home, and school during WW2 - but rooms were nice, and kept clean and tidy. Our room lacked a balcony which we would have made a lot of use of, and no tea/coffee making facilities in the rooms. Apart from that we had no complaints about the room. Roof top pool was good, if a little small, with great views over Funchal. Breakfast was ok - the usual cereal, tea, coffee, juice, fruit, croissants, ham, cheese etc etc but had to go into town for something different occasionally. The terrace at the front of the hotel was a nice place to sit, either at breakfast or in the evening after a walk back up the hill from town (we named this 'the hill of doom') - kept us fit I guess whilst on holiday. We soon met the Hotel cat - 'Carlotta' - who was frequently found on the terrace - and she came to see us pretty much every day at breakfast, or in the evening. Overall, the 'Hotel Monte Carlo' was a nice a hotel, if a little dated, centrally located (just 10 minutes walk from centre of Funchal) and was kept very clean by the staff who were most helpful. If you're not bothered about ultra modern accommodation - and ultra modern prices - then the Hotel Monte Carlo is perfectly adequate.

Great 12 days here. Lovely staff. Great breakfast overlooking Funchal every morning. Lovely old hotel, full of character. My only complaint would be the pillow was tiny and the bed uncomfortable. Up a very steep hill but steps on the steep bit and only 10 minutes to central funchal at a stroll. We will definately be back if we return to Funchal.

Traditional
Traditional hotel in a residential area up a very steep hill. No Restaurant available except for breakfast which I was advised by other guests not to bother with as not worth the cost. My welcome was amazing, shown the hotel and taken to my room. However be careful at the bar as he seems to charge what he likes. My room was spotlessly clean in every aspect but the very small balcony overlooked a scruffy residential area and you had to pass through the bathroom to access. There are a list of do and don't in the room. They did look after my bag on departure day so I could go and enjoy my last day.

Great Staff and Wonderful Views
This is a beautifully positioned hotel, with fantastic views to the mountains and the sea. It is a short walk into the city and to the marina, but the walk back is very steep. Get a cab for €5. The first room I was allocated was dark and close to the pool; there was little natural light and everything from the portable tv to the dial phone was out of date. It felt a bit like a chalet, and in the summer would've been fine, but in winter was musty and miserable. The staff noted my comments immediately and offered me a different room. Wow! What a difference! For a few extra Euros I found myself in a beautiful room with fantastic views! This transformed my experience completely. I would certainly suggest paying the extra on booking in future. I would stay here again and recommend to others. I would like to thank the staff wholeheartedly. They were amazing. Breakfast is basic, but the coffee is excellent.

Expected More
When we arrived at night the entrance and terrace with candle lit tables looked good The view at night looking down over the town was great. After a couple of quite expensive drinks we went up to our room to find a very tired and worn looking place . The bathroom was just as bad if not worse with flaking paint black mould on walls tiles and fittings. TV was very old and small. The bed was very uncomfortable and every spring could be felt . In the morning were woken up by the howling from a dog in nearby houses 20 - 30 yards away , NO sign of them in the nice hotel photos. This happened most of our stay along with the gardener below our open window doing a bit of pruning around 6.30 am . After buffet breakfast ( 2 out of 10 ) at best had a good look around only to find the whole place very tired and worn out. I know it's an old hotel with so called quirky charm but very badly maintained. There was no atmosphere about the place , was very dark inside the whole hotel . Not many guests used the bar or sat on the terrace at night enjoying the great view ??????? I think it might have be because a 5 min walk could get you drinks 2 - 3 times CHEAPER . We ate out all week , not even sure if you could get anything at night anyway. Didn't ask going by the breakfast. Only good thing was the great veiws from front rooms and the terrace. Hotel needs done up and cheered up . TOO DREARY AND QUIET. Will be back to maderia but NOT the monte carlo. PITY.

Faded grandeur; magnificent views, great location
I liked this hotel and would definitely stay again. It is in an imposing building which was undoubtedly once rather grand, but the fittings and furnishings are no longer matchingly luxurious, though everything is basically clean and tidy and functions as it should. The breakfast buffet has an adequate choice of items and there is plenty - I made a very hearty breakfast every day. The terrace at the front is terrific, and there's a common room on the first floor that also has great views. (As does the pool.) The staff are unassuming but helpful. Wifi is available in the public areas downstairs (including terrace), and for bookworms there are probably a hundred or so books in the bookcases downstairs and in the common room in a variety of languages (Scandinavian languages being over-represented for some reason). The walk to the seafront (where the main part of town is) is about 15 minutes, though it's uphill all the way back. I didn't find it exceptionally steep but anyone with mobility problems or who is extremely unfit or very obese might find the last 60% of it a bit demanding.

Great View.....but that's about it.
This was the first hotel we booked in preparation for our almost one month away from home. Chosen mainly because this hotel has been around for a long time plus offered a great view towards the Atlantic Ocean. Sadly, it is a property that has not been kept up in terms of maintenance. Since the price was quite reasonable, which included breakfast - one cannot complain too much. However, we hope the owners will spend some money to fix the place up. It has a lot of potential! While the location is unbeatable, rain leaking through the windows and/or ceiling onto the uninspired breakfast presentation does not entice visitors to return nor recommend to others. Staff were mostly friendly and helpful. Walking down to town was not a problem but walking up might be another matter (especially after a day of sightseeing). So, take a taxi up, as fares are not expensive in FNC (nor Portugal in general).

Our stay at Hotel Monte Carlo was excellent. Very pleased with the room, the view and the hotel facilities, especially the rooftop pool. Bar service was good - we enjoyed several refreshing gin & tonics on the terrace! Only slight disappointment came in that some hotel staff at times were not very accommodating but others were more so. Also, we opted to not have the breakfast as it didn't look great and preferred to try local options.

Lovely hotel, but high up
We spent 4 nights at the Monte Carlo Hotel (Late February) and we did enjoy our stay. The rooms are comfortable and clean and the bathroom was modern and also well maintained. The views from the front of the hotel are stunning you look out over Funchal and the sea. The hotel's high prominent position offers you a great panorama. Of course, such a view comes at a price at that is the hill it is situated on. It is quite a climb up the narrow streets from the waterfront to the hotel, so I would only recommend this hotel to people who are fit enough for the walk or can get a taxi back up the hill. There is no wi-fi in the rooms, only in the bar area and on the hotel veranda. Our room was directly above the bar, but it was not in range. We found the range of food quite limited. Breakfast is mainly continental with cheese, ham and salad etc. and fruit. There is yoghurt and cereals also available, but the only hot food at breakfast was either scrambled eggs or hard-boiled eggs neither of which was actually ever hot (unless you have breakfast early). We did not have an evening meal at the hotel because, again, the menu was too limited and only served 3 nights a week (This may be because it was only the end of February and not full season.) I am not vegetarian, but there did not appear to be a vegetarian option, only meat or fish. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. All-in-all, we had a lovely stay at the Monte Carlo. Staying here was a lovely experience. I would recommend it to others if you are able to cope with the hill climb to get home in the evening.
