Please note: The optional firewood charge of $10/night is for firewood. If you don't think you will use the firewood or would like to bring your own, please let us know! We are more than happy to refund that to you. PLEASE NOTE for November - March bookings: During these winter months, a four-wheel drive (4WD) or all-wheel drive (AWD) vehicle is recommended in case of implement weather. There is no trash service in the area, so we ask you to please take your trash with you. There are instructions in the cabin telling you where to go to take it so you don’t have to take it all the way home! Séjour de 4 nuits en août 2025 ### 10/10 – Excellent #### Robert & Sharon N., Yorktown, VA 4 août 2025 #### Great spot to relax and enjoy the river We checked in during a deluge of rain and in our rush to get in, we tried the combination on the Kwickset touchpad lock, but the key is in a lock box with a combination. A call to the property manager got immediate response, and she was quickly able to figure out the problem and solve it. After that, we didn't have any problems that required help. The unit is small, 2 bedrooms, one kitchen-den-dining area, and a small bathroom. Nonetheless, it is comfortable and has what you need. The cookware set appeared like new, and it was great. I cooked eggs and bacon in the skillet that heated evenly with no sticking. We found everything we needed for cooking. The stove is old-school electric, and it was clean and worked fine. There is a small microwave and a toaster oven as well. The fridge was not modern, but it was clean and worked fine. The grill is a veteran Weber that uses charcoal. There were more than enough grill utensils, but some were rusted, possibly because they were on the back porch and may have been neglected for some time. The back porch, which is screened and looks out on the river, is where we spent lots of time. The screen door is beat up, but we didn't have a bug problem. There is a nice table and comfortable chairs and a hot tub, which was clean and worked well. You will go in and out for activities, often wet and dirty, so the porch is well-used and rustic. In summary, the unit is rustic, comfortable, and well-equipped. ##### Robert & Sharon N. Clean and perfect size! Hot tub was clean. The power did go out once, but only for maybe 20 minutes. Good information was left in the guest info book. Only two things I would note is that the shower is very smell, and if you’re sensitive to scented detergent, I would bring your own bedding. There is a firewood charge. Could not use the jacuzzi during our stay as "stuff" in it. Management company did offer to have it drained but we were there only a few days and wanted the privacy. Definitely not looking as nice as the pics but if you want a nice private place to hang out this is it. Nothing to do with the owners but the overall fees and cleaning deposit etc., doubled the cost of our stay. ##### marie Q. Just my husband and me for our anniversary trip. Definitely the most well stocked kitchen with cutlery, good pots and pans, etc. plus plenty of spices. Right on the river! Only 20 minutes from wal mart and grocery stores but really out there to get the secluded feel we were looking for. Right down the road from Shenandoah River Outfitters. The ambiance was serene and is ideal for unwinding. We love the river, cooking s'mores at the fire pit, & playing at the yard. Everything is provided at Barney's retreat. All you need to bring is food. The not-so-favorite of ours is the hot tub because it appears not so clean and the water is a bit cloudy. Overall, Barney's Retreat is a perfect retreat for rejuvinating the mind and soul. ##### grace b. I sought out a property with a hot tub, that was along the Shenandoah River close enough to the Shenandoah NP, and was dog-friendly. The property was kind enough to allow us to have a second dog for an additional fee above their advertised 1 dog limit. Comms were smooth. The property was not super clean but manageable. I'll add, that I communicated with the property management team and they were attentive to addressing the concerns though were dismissive of the issues. The ceiling has dust and spiderwebs hanging throughout; overhead lights included. There was a wolf spider nest that spanned a couple of feet in the bathroom above the door. There was cookware and dishware that needed to be washed before use, the blender had a black grime on its button panel. The house water filter was in obvious need of replacement (My father and I are plumbers). I needed to clean the toilet when I arrived. The bathroom walls need cleaning as well. Our chief issue was the state of the hot tub. The water was cloudy to the point that you could not see the bottom of it and the interior of the cover had a green/brown algae/mold film on it. The property managers were amicable to our request for a refund of the cleaning fee and hot tub charge. Beyond the tub, spiders, and cleaning need, the property was fine and the location is great. I'd recommend the property and would stay again if the issues fielded were handled. ##### Matthew G. Needed complete cleaning with a water change. I sent an email with pics to the property mgr and they offered to send someone over but we declined knowing the time needed to resolve the issue. It was the perfect size for 2 and close to attractions. The house was clean and had everything you needed. The screened porch and fire pit were definitely a plus.
