A short distance away from the university scene, the Leeds City Centre is a thriving cultural hub full of theatres and galleries. Alongside the myriad museums and churches, the Georgian and Victorian architecture adorning the streets also provides insights into the city’s rich history. At the core of the city centre is Millennium Square, a modern and spacious plaza surrounded by some of Leeds’ most iconic landmarks. Admire the majestic façade of the Leeds City Museum that rises over the eastern side of the square. Enter for its vast and eclectic collection of historic relics, decorative art and natural history.

Bordering the plaza’s southern side is the redbrick building of the Carriageworks theatre. Check out its program of innovative and diverse shows, ranging from stand-up comedy and poetic storytelling to plays and other events. Enjoy cocktails at one of the bars in the square’s corners.

Stay into the evening and head to the O2 Academy Leeds, whose stage has been graced by some of the world’s most famous bands, including Madness, the Kaiser Chiefs and MGMT.

To reach this district, arrive at the Leeds Railway Station, which is just a 10-minute walk south from Millennium Square. The areas of Headingley and University of Leeds are directly north from here.
