I just returned from a stay at the Residence Mercure Diamant and I was pleased but not overly impressed.
Pros:
--Great view, and I believe that would be true from all the rooms as the hotel sits on the side of a hill and all buildings are terraced so they have a view (and there are not rooms on the "backside")
--Wonderful pool area ... it's huge and has a killer view of the ocean
--The restaurant food that we had was good and reasonably priced. One nice feature is that they serve sandwiches and pizza even at dinner, along with full meals, so you aren't "forced" into ordering a big expensive meal
--Nice open air lobby with great view and free wifi access
Cons:
--Grounds were pretty unkempt, with weeds about a foot high everywhere, although they appeared to be cutting the grass when we checked out. Keeping up the grounds would greatly improve the "curb appeal" of this hotel.
--Charged for clean towels. I found this system to be really bizarre and sort of cheapen their hotel and make it seem more like a hostel. I've never stayed in a hotel anywhere near this caliber that charged to change towels. After returning to our room the evening of our second night, we noticed the room hadn't been made up ... bed not made, towels we left in the floor not changed, etc. When I went to the front desk to exchange towels they said "Well did you fill out the form in your room for clean towels"? I hadn't ... it was a laundry request form all in French (I don't speak it that well and would have never thought to have had to fill it out for clean linens, towels, etc.). They charge 1 euro to give you a clean towel. Not a big deal, but really bizarre and, in my opinion, just sort of cheapens their hotel.
--Restaurant does not open for dinner until 7:30 pm, which is kind of inconvenient if you are really hungry like we were when we arrived
Neither pros nor cons, but other points:
--This property isn't really close to anything ... no other restaurants or businesses nearby ... but at the same time it really wasn't that far from the airport (about 12 miles or so, though with the horrible Fort de France traffic, it took us 50 minutes during rush hour to return to the airport to fly home). Pont du Bout is about 30 minutes away, as is Marin and, if you are there on a Sunday when there is little traffic, you could be to Fort de France in about 30 minutes, otherwise expect closer to 45 minutes to an hour ... in rush hour all bets are off. It's also well marked (get off main road from airport at the first Diamant exit and there will be a sign at the roundabout right before you enter Diamant that leads you to the hotel).
--Our room was bright and cheery, with average maintenance. Bathroom was very basic and a little run down, will probably disappoint those that have very high expectations.
