The staff were lovely and the location is excellent. Food was great. The building is very noisy which makes sleeping difficult as do the thin walls. The room was beautifully clean and the bed was comfortable.

Thank you for your great feedback, the staff will love too hear this, most likely through the thin walls. We hope the noise was not too big of an issue and you still enjoyed your stay!

Property is conveniently located to the national park especially for those hiking the Tangariro Alpine Pass. However the hotel itself is pretty rundown and badly in need of repairs. Paint was peeling everywhere and the shower valve was broken which almost caused me to scald myself. The staff is very friendly and helpful though.

Response from Kaz on Feb 16, 2024
We are sorry to hear that there was any issue with a shower valve? I know staff would have been onto fixing that immediately and indeed moving any guest to another room had there been a problem. Regarding the building, unfortunately, until there are DOC permissions and a DOC lease (which can take years) no improvements can proceed.

The room smelled like urine. The window hinges were broken so we couldn’t get any air unless we opened the door but then bugs would fly in.

All rooms are checked prior to guests arrival and none smell as you describe. We know you did not want the room you chose as it was downstairs and that we could not move you to a view room upstairs as we were a fully booked hotel. We know you were not happy about this. You do realize by choosing to stay in the heart of a National Park that you are bringing yourself into the natural habitat of all nature of critters. At least at this altitude their are no mosquitos. We have checked the sliding door and the window hinges as we would hate for there to be any issue for our guests. We have found that they are all sound and functioning.

The soaps and shampoo provided were very small. Tha bathtub was extremely slippery. The bed had an indent on one side. Room was musty and eventhough there is no ac in the rooms, they should at least offer some portable fans. We opened the sliding door but there was no screen to stop the bugs from entering.

Our beautiful NZ handmade organic soaps, shampoos and conditioners from the fabulous Rupi company are made for about 4 to 6 uses in an effort to eliminate waste. Wrapped in paper in our efforts to use zero plastic and work towards being a zero waste hotel. All left over soap (a crate full every few months) is returned to make horse shampoo. For replacements one need only ask at reception or place the room service sign out on their door. All baths have a plastic sucker mat provided to help avoid slipping and we have checked the bed and been unable to ascertain any problem. We are sorry you were out of your comfort zone here in the heart of the National Park. We are in the habitat of many critters (except for mosquitos who do not frequent us at this altitude, yay). It can be so cold in the mountains, and we have never had request for a fan before, so it took us by surprise. We have however now purchased a portable one.

The location is great for people who plan to go hiking in this national park. There is a restaurant serving decent Western food. We ordered pasta carbonara which was quite tasty. But the fish and chips were not up to the standard. Check-in was easy and handled by a friendly chap. The room was decent-sized for a big Q bed and a single bed for my teenage son. The water pressure is good, but the bathroom didn't have proper ventilation which is always one of my pet peeves whenever I stay at any hotel.

We stayed in Chalet 1 and it has big enough space for our family, our two big bags and four carry ons. This cabin has a deck and a dedicated parking for our vehicle. There’s a towel warmer in the shower area and the entry hall. Entry to the accommodation was just wide enough to lug a bag. It was a bit tricky going to the shower area coming from the inside as the doors both swing outwards but we found a way to make it work. My children loved that the Wifi still works in the public carpark at the bottom of Ngauruhoe Terrace. Breakfast buffet is $25 and feels expensive for what’s on offer. Not sure if it was the weather or poor lighting in the restaurant but somehow it affected the palatability of the food. For dinner it was a hit for my my husband and myself (we ordered the salmon and vegan lasagna), but a miss for my two children (they ordered the pasta of the day and the fish and chips). Pasta was too creamy and the fish batter was not that crispy. The clouds parted on our last day and Mount Ngauruhoe showed itself. We love that we have a good view of it from the deck. Overall it was a good stay. This accommodation is positioned well for exploring the national park.

Perfect location for hiking in the park. The outdoor patio at the bar has a great view and great staff, however our room smelled disgusting. We visited in the summer but the room still smelled like sweaty ski gear. Would recommend for the location, but the resort could use a major refresh.

Right at the base of a few good walks around the national park, but hotel is a bit raggedy and could do with a face lift. We checked in late and our room smelled sickly sweet. I hate to say it, but kinda like vomit. It was too late to tell anyone though. Room was clean, but dingy. Same with bathrooms. Best part was the lounge which was spacious and had a great view. And also the restaurant since there are very few options right in that area. (There is a very cute food and coffee truck down the main road by the brewery though!)

We are delighted you could enjoy this location with all the hikes starting right from the door step. Hotel unfortunately will not receive a face lift without a lease enabling us to do so and may well go the way of every other business in this location and cease to be. We have been unable to locate the smell you refer to sorry.

This was one of the worst places we stayed in NZ. Our room was not what we reserved. It was a tiny wooden box with a tiny bed. My husband is tallish and his feet hung 8 inches off the bed. We reserved a queen room, and when I asked staff why we were given a double super tiny room 8x10, she responded queen room does not mean the bed... This makes no sense. The room was located next to the dinning room, so our room was loud until around 11 PM and became noisy again around 6 AM. We slept very little. The bed was a taco and you could feel all the springs. Breakfast is bread and sausages for NZD25.00, we passed. This is not a good place to stay even for just a passthrough. Pay a few extra dollars and stay somewhere else. Only decent thing was the shower.

Hello, you reserved a backpacker queen, which is exactly the room you booked. Room sizes and bed sizes are all stated on the website for an informed choice. The bed is less than 5 years old and as I have slept in it myself recently, I can testify that it is in good condition and comfortable and yes the shower is fabulous. 12 much larger hotel room types with king beds are available to choose from for those that prefer not to be in the confines of a loud and busy backpackers. Breakfast is hardly bread and sausages, please a little honesty. Its an array of 68 individual choices of cooked and continental foods plus an array of juices and tea and coffee options. For those of you reading this that would like to stay in this fabulous location give it a go and see for yourselves.

This place is amazing for hikers, skiers and students travelling New Zealand but I did feel like an extra in the shining walking the halls at night to find a toilet. It was an experience and value for money was there but I doubt I would visit again unless needing to be in the mountains.

Absolutely amazing for hikers with all the hiking trails starting right from the door step and skiers with NZs largest ski field only minutes away. Sightseers too with the Gondola just minutes away. We do have a shinning vibe for sure but have passed that baton to the now empty Chateau. The corridors are well lit at night and the toilet block only steps away from the backpacker sleeping area.
