If you like to walk (we do), it's perfect... otherwise you'll be riding the bus to get to a train station. We walked most days to EMMACHI JR station and then connected to subway lines downtown - a 15min walk with kids. If you're headed to Arishiyama, EMMACHI or the green JR line both work with a short walk. Local markets around hotel are ok... but closest proper grocery store only opens at 10am and is pretty small. We loved walking the local side streets and sampling food from the garage-come-family-restaurants. All in all, great value.
