lovely hotel in a beautiful setting

Posted 28-Feb-2014
Pros: This is a small hotel and each of the accomodations seem very private because of all the foliage. The rooms are large and attractive with good beds.
Cons: I thought the lighting in the dining room was a little distracting for such a peaceful place.
Location: It is possible to walk or take a taxi into Jaco to enjoy the beach, shops, and restaurants. In Carrara Park you can hire a guide--20-minute by taxi.
I stayed at Docelunas several times on a trip with my son. Wherever we went it was always wonderful to come back to Docelunas. The grounds of the hotel are well-maintained and are like a park, with the rainforest at the back of the grounds and rising above the hotel. Two other visitors saw 20 species of birds at the hotel during only one day--I think they saw another ten while they were there. Relaxing by the pool is another favorite activity--if relaxing can be counted as an activity. The pool is a beautiful irregular shape with an attractive mosaic pattern and a waterfall at one end. The pool is also available 24 hours, unlike most places where there are morning and evening limits on pool use. The restaurant and bar are open-air and the yoga studio and spa are above them with pleasant views.

Quiet, peaceful hotel off the beaten path

Posted 7-Jan-2014
Pros: Staff, pool, location, nice-sized rooms, good A/C
Cons: Breakfast (incl. in rate) is quite basic, and there were lots of bugs - esp. ants - in the rooms. Understandable in the jungle, but still gross.
Location: Mostly a surfer town with a reputation for loud parties, the beaches at Jaco aren't great for families, but it's a great point to get everywhere else.
This cozy hotel is nestled among tropical plants, affording a sense of privacy and peacefulness not available at hotels that are closer to the Jaco beaches/town. The spread-out grounds also mean that you rarely see/hear other guests, and even common facilities like the pool are pleasantly unoccupied. The staff was very nice and incredibly accomodating in every way. When our A/C unit burned out, they first tried to repair it immediately, then changed us to another room and offered an across-the-board discount to compensate the bother.

Not what we expected

Posted 27-Dec-2012
Pros: Free yoga class. Waiter was very nice and helpful.
Cons: Hotel was not fully operational -- no real spa, jacuzzi didn't heat, no other guests
Location: It's a gated park like setting in a not particularly nice neighborhood about 2KM from Jaco. It is certainly quiet.
We were disappointed. Clean, but lacked luster. We were there at Christmas. No decorations. The place was deserted. Missed opportunity to treat us to a room upgrade -- instead we paid full fare including $25 per kid extra per night. They turned on the pool waterfall just when we went to the pool. Jacuzzi didn't heat at all. The "spa" didn't really exist. If you wanted a treatment, they'd bring someone in from town. The Jaco area was a big let down and part of our disappointment with the hotel. No real reason to stay in Jaco except maybe for proximity to San Jose airport on your first or last night in the country. HIGHLY RECOMMEND staying in or near Manuel Antonio which has so much more to offer in terms of wildlife viewing, attractive beaches and views. We found there to be plenty of hotels in all price ranges right in Manuel Antonio.

Beautiful hotel, but appears to be run poorly.

Posted 7-Apr-2012
Pros: Nice grounds, room clean
Cons: No staff presence to assist with needs, etc
Location: Outside of jaco
After we checked in the front desk clerk left about 1 hour later. No phones in rooms. No one to contact for more towels, etc ... In morning went to restaurant for included breakfast at 7:15 (supposed to open at 7). Kitchen not open, no one at front desk, etc. when we did finally get breakfast around 8 waiter very nice. Overall, just poor efficiency and disorganized. Hotel beautiful! We stayed in arenal and manual Antonio and staff was more present and available. Just a let down after these amazing hotels...
