Had a view of the Hollywood sign from our hotel. It was nice to see but nothing special.
We went up to the Canyon Lake Drive at about 9AM in the morning, it was quite, only a few cars parked along the street, we could take picture as much as we wanted.
Take photo on the way to Universal Studios Hollywood if going there to get best flick
Long walk if you have small children.
Unless you have a professional camera I don't think you are ever going to get a good pic of it yourself, even if you go up to Griffith Park Observatory. Buy a postcard.
We parked at lake Hollywood park and walked all the way up mullholland drive which leads to the arched gate on 3390 Durand drive. Walk on through the left hand side of gate up to the best spot to take pics of the Hollywood sign!! If your up for it, continue you up the paved mt lee drive to view the Hollywood sign from behind! Beautiful view of LA and surrounding area! Took us two hours 15 minutes round trip or the entire adventure!
